51 & 61 look-up please - J. Brown (East Royal Street?)
« on: Tuesday 30 July 13 20:23 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I'm researching the applicant of a number of factory plans I've been viewing recently - J. Brown (don't yet know first name) of East Royal Street. He was the owner of J. Brown & Sons hosiers on Rutland Street in Leicester. I'm looking for all household members and occupations.

May be a bit of a long-shot, he was 'of East Royal St' in an 1854 application, but not sure how long he stayed there for.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, you may of already have seen this site,

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LEI/

If not, there is a section which reads:

Census

Our census page for England gives general information.
The 1851 Census for Leicestershire has been indexed by the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society. The whole index is available on microfiche. The society has also published 24 volumes in printed form.

Thanks for that - I'm actually a Leicester resident though and just trying to make my mammoth trip to the record office run a bit more smoothly tomorrow. I've got so much to do and locate (currently writing my thesis) and knowing a bit more about this guy before tomorrow would make my day run a bit more smoothly. Unfortunately my Ancestry subscription has run out so I'm not much use myself!

Hi,

On the Gazetteer & Directory of Leicestershire & Rutland, 1861 there is an entry for the address
80 1/2 Rutland Street for a John Brown & Mr J Stafford, perhaps this is the Mr Brown you are researching?

JJ

Interesting. I think it must be - the address is now 82 to 86 and 82a Rutland Street, but the building was significantly extended in 1862 and 1864, so the numbers will be all mixed-up. Had no idea there was a J. Stafford associated with the place - that's going to be very useful.. Much appreciated.

Thank you Mike! And thank you anyone else who was looking at the same time - huuuugely appreciated. Gloves, eh? Interesting, again. I presume it was still gloves in 61?

Don't suppose I could be terribly cheeky and ask for 71 and 81 too, of the same family?...
