Help wiith the name Rosetta
« on: Wednesday 31 July 13 12:21 BST (UK) »
Hi there, i have been doing some reasearch into a friends fam tree and come across the name Rosetta. Does any one know if this was a common name in Essex in the 1800s ? She was born in Colchester, 1837 to a Robert and Eliza Holmes. Unfortunately i can find no further info on either of her parents. I was just wondering why this name should suddenly pop up. Any thoughts would be most welcome, Kim.

Hi,
I also have Rosetta as a first name in my tree, someone born in the 1860's, in Kent. I just had a look online, and don't know if the name came from this, or somewhere else?

Maybe it became popular as people were more aware of it?

That makes sense, a lot of big events start off new fashions for names. I also have a Kezia b. 1813 in White Colne, a name I have never even heard of before. Kim  :)

I have a Kezia too - born 1799 in Kent. I love finding unusual names - it helps with the research doesn't it?!

Kezia is a Hebrew name meaning "cassia" (a sweet-scented spice)- in the Bible she was the daughter of Job. It was a very popluar name in Puritan times.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

well, maybe a small % of those christened 'Rosetta' were aware of Napoleon et al, but in fact its simply an Italian variant of Rosa - just like 'our' Rose and has a long pedigree predating the discovery of the Stone ....

I too have Rosetta's on my tree, A lovely name I think.
With all the usual common names, it's great to periodically come across more unusual ones.
My favourite one is Amaretta, in the late 18th century. Goodness knows where the parents found that name!!!!
