Wildwoods in Enfield..
« on: Wednesday 31 July 13 12:42 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather was a Coachman for a house in the 1900's and lived with his family in a room above the stables. The house on the census was Wildwoods, Clay Hill, Enfield and I've tried and tried to find information on it, google maps, old photos etc but with no joy. Wondering if anyone could help me out with the house or old photos?  ::)

Have found it now - there are 2 Lodges at Wildwoods (head of house of both is a gradener - then there is an entry for "living over Stables at" and Wildwoods is dittoed -then there are Oakhill Cottages
Is this correct?

And on the census, it says the 'Living over stables' bit but that's all I can decipher  ::)

that's the entry - will look at it again - name was Putman

I think Wildwood may have been a place more than just a building - it gets a mention in British History online Enfield

Yes, I thought perhaps Wildwoods was a place and maybe not a building as I couldn't find anything on it. Although in British History online, it says that Clay Hill Lodge survives as well as Wildwoods  ???

I've followed the enumerater's walk
I'll give address and occupation of head of household

Lodge on Clay Hill- coachman
Clay Hill Lodge -own means
High View Clay hill Corn Merchant
Oakhill Cottages  Clay Hill - General labourer
ditto - Butcher
ditto - married female and child
ditto -widow & daughter
Room over stable (Kingswood Clay Hill Coachman
Cottage Kingswood Clay Hill Gardener
St Christophers Clay Hill Schoolmaster
then address changes to:
Flash Lane -schoolmaster
Flash Lane - Gardener
Lodge at Wildwoods Flash Lane (dittoed)- Gardener
Wildwoods Flash Lane - Retired Steam Ship Manager (had lots of servants)
Lodge at Wildwoods Clay Hill -Gardener
Rooms over stable at "do"+ ditto -s0 should be Clay Hill - your G Grandfather
Clay Hill -Road labourer
then there are White Cottages Clay Hill

so from census it looks like Wildwood was a large house on flash lane and the lodges attached to it were on Clay Hill

just looked at Listed buildings enfield

There is Clay Hill House Lodge -address now 185 Clay Hill
and Grade 11 listed is " Bridge at West End of Lane , Whitewebbs Wood (now part of Wild Woods Garden Centre Flash Lane)
Think this must be pretty close to the location - the cottages after Wild woods are Whites Cottages
