Thank you Karenlea I also posted in Hertfordshire. Also I found a death for an Elizabeth Sanders in 1889 age 44  in a workhouse would that be because she had a disease that she had to be isolated. Thanks Lynne

Hi again Lynne

Generally people were admitted to the Workhouse if they were too poor or too ill to care for themselves and their families.  If this is in fact your Elizabeth in the Workhouse, it might be that her husband has died or deserted her and she is without an income and therefore unable to care for herself and any children they may have had together.  Or she might have become ill and have no family with the means to care for her.  I am assuming that you have already tried to trace both James and Elizabeth in Census after their marriage??

Cheers
Karenlee

Thank you Karenlee I have tried to trace both Elizabeth and James after their marriage but not knowing much about towns etc in England or Scotland I have been unable to find anything, apart from a possible child named Alice kate born in 1869 and maybe a James born in1874 or an Arthur William who died here in Australia.in 1957. Census  has so many names the same I get lost. Thanks Lynne

In 1871 they appear to be living just over the border in Hay on Wye in Wales.  James was a miller and there are no children

James Saunders 26 born Eardisley Herefordshire
Elizabeth Saunders 24 born Clifford Herefordshire

If it is the same couple it looks as though Elizabeth died age 26 in March qtr 1873 in Hay and in 1874 James married an Esther Williams in Hay in June qtr.

In 1881 the couple are living in Hay with daughter Sarah age 4
