William Rogers c1830
« on: Sunday 04 August 13 11:14 BST (UK) »
dear all,
I am trying to find the birth/baptism of my ancestor William Rogers c1830, census details of him living in Sudbury, Suffolk, give his birth place as Ballingdon, Essex and subtracting his age from census year give a birth range from 1828-1830.
His parents were ;
William Rogers born 1807 Sudbury, Suffolk and
Elizabeth Tiffen (neeBocking) (neeogers) born 1800 Middleton, Essex

I would be really thankful for any information anyone could help me with,
all the best
Pete ::)

hiya Trevor
thanks for this information, I didn't have young Williams baptism.

This is proving to be a difficult puzzle to solve, the reason for looking for Williams actual birth is the fact that in later life ( and further generations)  uses the name William Bocking Rogers.

His Mother Elizabeth was married to a James Bocking c1799 at all Saints, Sudbury, 13-11-1820, before she married William snr, st greg's, Sudbury 30-7-1830. and many within my family believe that William could have been a son of Eliz and James Bocking.

I dint have a death for James Bocking, only a note that his birth place is also Ballingdon in Essex  ??? but do have the births and deaths of Eliz and James's other children, curiously the children die in 1830, 31 and 32 buried all saints, Sudbury  ???

hi pete
for what it,s worth there is a place called bocking about 15 miles from Sudbury it,s virtually a suburb of Braintree now if you do a google map view the road from Sudbury goes up ballingdon hill through to halstead then on to bocking then Braintree so possible that in times passed some of the family adopted bocking as a surname as that's where they originated from .
will have a look at parish registers for a james bocking shortly .

hi again Trevor

yes indeed, the town of Bocking, something I have considered and a viable possibility, although the James Bocking link is such a strong clue, whereby possibly the name Bocking is added to the Rogers name in memory of Elizabeth's first husband and the death of her first 3 children ,,,,

Finding the death or burial of James Bocking somewhere before 1830 is just as important to me as finding the birth date of William Rogers and I am very thankful for the research you and others are doing for me
all the best
Pete

hi pete
can,t find a death for james bocking in middleton bulmer or any of the 3 wickhams .
but in case they are of use to you did find while looking these other 4 bockings .
Samuel bocking buried 29 apr 1826 age 69  place bulmer
Thomas  buried 25 mar 1838 age 75 place bulmer
john buried 6 dec 1829 age 60  place wickham st paul
mary buried 4 july 1832 age 88 place wickham st paul

most likely james is in the Sudbury parish books if someone has access to Suffolk parishes , can,t find any ref in familysearch for him either .

hi Trevor
thanks for your efforts, yes I think that you are correct in saying that James Bocking most probably died and was buried in Suffolk and most likely in Sudbury, all Saints or st Gregory. I shall post a request on the Suffolk list later.

Back to William Rogers c1828-1830,,,,,, the facts so far,,, residing in Sudbury, Suffolk he gives his birth place as ;
1841 HO107/1044-2-32 age 11, not born in County
1851 HO107/1789-21-91 age 22, born Sudbury, Suffolk
1861 RG9/1130-30-12 age 33, born Ballingdon, Essex
1871 RG10/1716-155-24 age 41, born Ballingdon, Essex
1881 (unknown reference) age 51, born Ballingdon, Essex
1891 no details ( can anyone find this,,,, please ) I have Death certificate 10-12-1894 Bethnal green, east London, and do not know when he leaves Sudbury for the smoke of London)

* William is pretty persistent with being born in Ballingdon, Essex
* ages from census gives birth range 1828-1830
* baptised 26-3-1833 st gregory, Suffolk
# his parents, William and Elizabeth bury the 3 children she had with previous hubby (James Bocking) at All Saints, Sudbury in 183/1831 and 1832

Things are definitely pointing towards Sudbury !

does anyone have access to any; all saints, st gregory or st Peter birth records or possibly the Bishops transcripts as maybe some records are missing/damaged/unreadable etc ?
please  :P
Pete ( wondering more and more if he is really a Bocking ) Rogers
