Blanchard children 1911 census
« on: Sunday 11 August 13 17:29 BST (UK) »
Taking advantage of the free 1911 census at Ancestry I have tried to find the following Blanchard family members without success.
Alice b. 1898, Annie b. 1900,  Elsie b. 1906, and Herbert b. 1908.
They are the children of John and Mary Blanchard and were I think all born in South Duffield. I am certain that all the females were still alive in 1911, not sure about Herbert. I also believe that their parents were still alive in 1911.I do have the family on the 1901 census.

Please can anyone help.

Using the 'other members of the household' free index search gives you this household:

William Blanshard aged 81
John Blanshard aged 55
Mary Blanshard aged 48
Alice Blanshard aged 13
Annie Blanshard aged 11
Elsie Blanshard aged 5
Herbert Blanshard aged 2

Blanchards 1911 census cont.

Thanks for your prompt and helpful response. I was surprised to see that William is shown in the family home. He was my great, great grandfather on my mothers side.
Can you help me again please. I still can`t find this info on Ancestry, no doubt because I`m not familiar with the search. I would like to look at the original 1911 document and its transcription if that`s possible.
Another question if I may.  The 1911 census shows my grandmother Gertrude Ward[nee Blanchard] born Burn,  but all previous info. that I have found gives it as South Duffield. Is this just a recording error?

Cyndy,

I'm not sure why you can't find them. I have checked the index on Ancestry and all the names are there. Did you use the exact spelling I gave you?

Don't over-complicate your search. Simply search for Blanshard (note spelling) living in  South Duffield, (nothing else at all) and all the names you gave in your initial query will appear on the index. I have just done this, and all the names appear. You will then be able to check on everything that's on the original image.

I followed JenB's instructions, and found the family first time!

The only thing I would add is to only search the 1911 census, and not a general search.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Does it show birthplace 'Burn' on the original image, as it does in the free index?

If so, this her birthplace as written down by the head of the household, and not a transcription error.

Perhaps he didn't know where she was born, and simply assumed she'd been born in Burn. Or possibly she had lived there at some time and thought it was her birthplace?
