James and Janet Luke deceased 1850-1860
« on: Tuesday 13 August 13 11:14 BST (UK) »
Hi Having helped me over the months. I am stuck on finding the death dates of the above.

James Luke b 1781 Angus Dundee.

Janet Luke (nee Wallace) b 1779.

Last child born was 1821 Janet Luke 397/00 0030 0194 Tulliallan.

James is recorded on 1841 Census as living with daughter Janet SCT1841/397

So James is still alive in 1841 Janet Luke (nee Wallace) does not appear.

Tracing death records in ScotlandsPeople does not record any deaths for James or Janet.

Can you help.

Clive

Hi Clive,

Looks like Janet Luke nee. Wallace had died before 1841 Census. Compulsory death registration did not begin till 1855, as you may already know. Parish records for deaths and burials were not well kept and it's possible sadly that no record of Janet's death has survived. Have you tried searching the OPR's on Scotlands People for Janet Wallace? Women sometimes kept their own names during this period.

James Luke seems to have died prior to the 1851 Census. So the same applies unfortunately.
His daughter Janet age 29 is on the 1851 Census working as a "Servant at Home" for her unmarried brother David , age 46 who is also a Mason and living at Kirkstreet, Tulliallan.

If you have no joy with OPR's on Scotland's People, maybe it would be worth finding out if there is a headstone for either or both at Tulliallan. http://www.memento-mori.co.uk/

Good luck with your search,
Looby :)

Deaths were never registered much. Some parishes kept a burial register, others noted in the accounts when a payment had been made for the mortcloth, but there never was the amount of information that there is for marriages and baptisms.

If the parish registers have nothing, there might be a gravestone (but again few people had gravestones and not all survive or are visible above ground).

There might be a testament, but again most people didn't have one.

If the person was in receipt of money from the parochial board, their death would probably be recorded, or at least payments would stop (not all parochial board records survive).

Often the only clue to a death is indirect, for example, a person no longer appears as a witness to baptisms.
