Patch/Churchill Marriage on Jersey
« on: Wednesday 14 August 13 12:42 BST (UK) »
Would anybody be so kind to look for a marriage on Jersey for me.

I'm looking for a marriage between a Zacharias or Zachariah Patch and an Eliza (or Elizabeth) Churchill. It would have occurred between 1841 and 1851. Sorry for the large timespan but I can't narrow it down further than that. Possibly married in St Helier or St Clement.

It would solve a mystery if I could find this marriage  :)

Here's the marriage that you are looking for. It took place at the St Helier Town Church on the 1st of August, I omitted to write down the year but as it was on page 45 of a register covering 1847 to 1851 probably 1848 , I can check again next week.

Zachariah Patch, aged 30, bachelor, occupation Labourer, living in St Helier, born in Allsnby(?) - probably not but impossible to read, Devon. Father Thomas Patch, Labourer
to
Eliza Churchill, aged 23, spinster, living in St Helier, born Chaffcombe, Somerset. Father Isaac Patch, Labourer
Witnesses Frederick Wright and Emily Dyer.

While looking through the indexes for the above marriage I found this one which would appear to be Zachariah's brother, also at St Helier Town Church. It was on 5th March 1845. Both Zachariah and Edward seem to be in Jersey in 1841.

Edward Patch, aged 33, Labourer, living in St Helier, born in Elsbere Devon. Father Thomas Patch, Labourer
to
Caroline Churchill, aged 22, spinster, living in St Helier, born in Chaffcombe Somerset. Father Joseph Churchill, Labourer.
Witnesses Thomas Sinatt (?) and Emily Dyer.

Regarding the Allsnby/Elsbere question a bit of googling throws up Aylesbeare as a possible candidate, it's close to Exeter in East Devon.

That's fantastic La Grande-Methe, that's exactly what I was hoping for. Thank you so much!!

You are spot on that Edward is Zachariah Patch's brother. Edward and Caroline are my 3x Great Grandparents. Eliza Churchill is cousin to Caroline Churchill. Keeping it in the family, so to speak!

You are also correct about Aylesbeare. Their parents are living there in the 1841 census. Although both Edward and Zachariah were baptised in Harpford close by.

If you do manage to pin down the year, that would be great. But a very big thank you for finding the info that you have. You've made my month  ;D

loulouq - Are you related to the Churchill family?   I'm trying to find the marriage of Joseph & Mary Churchill (Caroline's parents)  Joseph was christened Dec 12 1790 at St. Michael in Chaffecombe Somerset.

Hi Islanddream,
Joseph and Mary Churchill are my 4x great grandparents...twice  ;) I'm related to them by their daughters Caroline and Deborah Churchill. Caroline married Edward Patch. Deborah Churchill married Edward Locock (or at least had a son by him anyway) Their grandchildren Henry Patch and Alice Locock (my great grandparents) married in 1893.
As to Joseph and Mary's marriage, that's a bit of a problem. I have a provisional date and place of 1818 in Chaffcombe (from the dreaded Ancestry trees!), but there is no evidence for this marriage in the online records for Chaffcombe marriages. Freereg.org.uk has the relevant date coverage for Chaffcombe marriages but the marriage is not there. More digging is required I'm afraid. I'll take a look into this over the next couple of evenings. By the way Mary's surname is given as Langford from the same trees.
