Baptism lookup - Black Bourton - Richard Maisey c1706
« on: Sunday 18 August 13 11:02 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have a Richard Maisey (Maizey, Mazy, Maysey, Meysey, Mazey) d1769 and probably born around 1706 in Black Bourton (or possibly somewhere nearby?). He married a Mary in Black Bourton. I could really do with his baptism info as this has been a brick wall for me for a long time now!

Thanks

The OFHS transcriptions for Black Bourton show a baptism May (no date) 1707 for a child of Richard MAIZEY. I assume the rest is illegible - it might be worth looking at the original (at the Oxford History Centre) to see if it looks like a son, Richard.
Other baptisms are:
14 March 1693 (1693/4?) John son of Richard & Ann MASEY
13 Feb 1704 (1704/5?) Sophia dau of Richard & Ann MAIZEY farmer

Ann ("wife of Richard) MAIZEY was buried on 29 April 1720
There is also a burial for a Samuel MAZEY, son of Richard & Ann 22 March 1722 and some others with the same surname. Richard appears to have been buried 17 Sept 1729

I think I may have found the proof that Richard is the father of Richard, in the Gloucestershire online archives:

http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/DServe/dserve.exe?dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=Show.tcl&dsqSearch=(RefNo=='D678/1/4/1/2/3-33')

In particular, this will:

"28: Will (5 September 1729) of Richard Maysey of Black Bourton; Aldsworth property to son Richard, but should he die without issue, then to daughters Jane and Sophia Maisey equally; estate for lives at Bourton to all three children equally; all other possessions to them equally; son is sole executor."

He left property to a Richard and also had a daughter named Sophia - must be the same guy? Interesting that he died 17 September (perhaps a hastily written will by a gravely ill man?).

Therefore any chance of a baptism for the elder Richard (d1729)?  :)

There's nothing in Black Bourton. A Maizey family (Thomas & Ursula) baptise children there 1647-64, but no sign of a Richard. Then there's a strange gap in the surname until 1693. I can't see a marriage for Richard/Ann or Thomas/Ursula either. There is however a single baptism in the year 1654 which looks suspicious - every other year has at least 12-20. The rest of the Commowealth period looks normal

Very interesting. There is much mention of property in Aldsworth so I may need to look there next.

Thanks again
