Chelmsford workhouse.

does anyone have access to Chelmsford workhouse records?   I am looking for details of George Bannister who died there around 1884.  The George I am interested in was born in Danbury, Essex and in the 1881 census he seems to appear in the workhouse and Danbury at the same time, although the date of birth is different.If there are any workhouse records it may prove if it is the same George.

Many years ago I found the original Workhouse record books for Chelmsford at the Public Records Office at Kew. I presume they're still there.

I`m afraid I don`t live anywhere near there, and cannot get there easily, but thanks all the same for letting me know. Maybe I can get a relative to go sometime.

don,t know if this helps but in deaths there is only 2 records for a geo bannister between 1880 and 1890, 1 is for reg dist west ham the other is for George bannister reg dist Chelmsford oct-dec 1884  age at death 71 vol 4a page 211 .

Makes me wonder what I looked at at the PRO?

Thanks everyone for your help. I think the one I want is the Chelmsford one. I am interested in when he went in as his wife has him on her census as well.  Maybe she was ashamed to admit he was in the workhouse.

if you get death cert it will tell you place of death so save a trip to records office .
