Thank you for correcting me on John's birth and death. I've downloaded the certificate from SP and I did have the wrong one!

Just checked Niel Ferguson's war record. He was based down in Canterbury until some time in 1873. Frederick was born in the Apr-Jun quarter. NF is listed as arriving in Meerat 7.1.74. Family search have the baby listed as Neil Frederick and NF refers to
his
children on the headstone. It may be that he adopted him when he married Rose Anna but I think it is likely that he was the father.

George Victor, Margaret_Betsey, Albert Edward, Robert Lennard. The woman with child on her lap is - to quote my father- "a family friend"
Ahhhh… I just noticed - the photograph appears to be taken in Canterbury….
