I'm not sure about this but I believe that in 1888 is was still illegal for a man to marry his deceased wife's sister.  The law was changed in the early 1900's.

Perhaps that's why he declared himself a bachelor, not a widower.

Hi Peter,

I think that Ancestry has some London School Records for the period that you're interested in, - but I don't have current access to that Site.

I've had a look at Find my Past for you, but they only seem to have School Records for Manchester.

Hopefully someone with access will be able to help you further.

Romilly.

Another thought Peter...

You could contact:

'The Ancient Society of College Youths', to see what records (if any) they hold on your ancestor. He was Secretary of the Society from 1892—1937, - and should at least feature in minutes of meetings, etc.

Try
"Aim25" website, click Education.

Under Education Officer's Department -Division 8, a Holy Trinity C of. E School is listed.  If the school log books have been deposited, other papers may have too.  You can often get a pretty good insight into character of the Head through the entries they make in the log books.
Hope this is the correct school and that you can find what you are looking for.
