Old street names: South Shields and district (<== Completed by Stan)
« on: Tuesday 27 August 13 13:51 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to place a number of street names which occur in the Victorian census returns. I've tried tracing these by scanning through the returns for street names on either side. I can't locate them on the 1895 Old OS maps of South Shields, Harton and East Jarrow. I have a feeling they may have been in the vicinity of Holy Trinity Church, Cornwallis Square and Westoe.

As a start, where was Olliver Street?

Many thanks Alan

Derby: Naylor, Ball, Haywood
Buckinghamshire: Cook
London: Craxford, Lane Crauford
Tyneside: Nessworthy, Simpson

Many thanks - the double 'l' on the census return is confusing.

Any thoughts on Turn Coat Row - 1861 describes it as Holy Trinity and Westoe district

Turn Coat Row is in the neighbourhood of Barnes according to the 1871 census but I can't find it on a map. You can see Barnes on the 1862 map http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=435798,565354

Hi Stan

That's most helpful - many thanks

One final one! Where might you find (from the 1841 census) Deer's Lane / Tyne Street - which findmypast attributes to "Jarrow, Shields, South Shields"

Cheers Alan

Hi Alan,
Deer's Lane is on the 1896 Town Plan at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=436000,567218

That again makes sense. The area shows very clearly in outline on the Old OS map of South Shields 1895 (Godfrey edition) but none of the streets are named.

Many thanks

Hi, I saw this post and have tried to access the web site you provided { http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=436000,567218 } but it no longer seems to exist. Any other ideas of connections?
