Family of Harriet Goodrich, March
« on: Tuesday 27 August 13 18:45 BST (UK) »
From family knowledge I know that a Harriet Goodrich married a Herbert Towler March 29th 1904 in March, Cambridgeshire and is shown as 22years. i.e. born 1882.  Her father is listed as a Thomas Goodrich.  I have traced a birth certificate for a Harriet Goodridge born October 1882 at Walters Yard, March with a father name Thomas.  In both cases listed as a Labourer.  The mothers name on this appears to be an Emily Moyse.  There may be a brother - Thomas listed as a lodger in 1911 census and I was told a sister Charlotte who I cannot trace.  However, there does not appear to be any other entries for this bit of the family history that I can trace.  Has anyone any ideas

Hi,

A warm welcome to RootsChat  :)

1891
Walter`s Yard, March (right address)

Thomas Goodrich Clark  ::) , Head Mar, 39, Agricultural Labourer, Elmswell Suffolk
Emily Goodrich Clark, Wife, Mar, 45, Elmswell Suffolk
Harriet Clark, Daur, 8, Elmswell Suffolk  ::)
Thoms Clark, Son, 6, Elmswell Suffolk
Sarah Clark, Daur, 4, Elmswell Suffolk
Lucy Moye Clark, Daur, 15, Elmswell Suffolk

Despite the birth places this seems like the correct family albeit a bit muddled.

I think I can see Emily in 1871 & 1881 with her parents Frederick & Mary - transcribed as Mayes. She was b 1863 - think 1891's age is a mistake. Given the difference in ages I suspect some issue with ability to marry (haven't found a marriage yet) and hence the odd surname in 1891

Hunting Sarah brings perhaps a better suggestion for Emily, nearer the 1891 age, from 1851, in Haughley (Sarah's pob on 1891)

James Moyes    28
Lucy Moyes    33
Charles Moyes    7
James Moyes    5
Emely Moyes    5
Sarah Moyes    2

which brings us to this marriage

Jun 1879    Stow S.    4a   847
Butcher    George
MAYES    EMILY

Presumably Emily went up to Yorkshire to be near her sister, hence the children

I think you are right Mabel.  I just cant find a reason why he changed his surname yet.

It looks as though they didn't marry until 1884 :

Thomas Goodrich and Emily Butcher December qtr 1884 North Witchford vol. 3b page 1200.
