Frank & Francis Vernon, Birmingham
« on: Wednesday 28 August 13 11:34 BST (UK) »
This is my first post so please bear with me!  I am really stuck on my GG Grandfather Frank Vernon.  I have a military record for him stating his birth year as 1879. It says his birthplace is what looks like "St Martin, Warwick"?
He married Ellen Short on 30 May 1904 in St Michaels Catholic church and I have the certificate. He was a Salt Hawker and lived in Aston, Birmingam his whole life until his death in 1928.  It says his fathers name was Francis Vernon, occupation "boatman" on the marriage cert.  I can't find a birth for him that fits or any census records for him or any Francis Vernon that have an occupation of boatman.  Would appreciate any leads or even ideas of where to look next.

I think he was in the army and gives his father as George Vernon. Frank Ernest Vernon was a Diamond Setter when attested in 1900.  He appears to have married Louisa Podmore in 1908  :)

Thanks for your replies!  I have looked into the Frank Ernest Vernon, I thought I had him there but it wasn't as he married the wrong lady!  I have the regimental numbers for my Frank Vernon they were 33495 and 572950.  That's where I got the birthplace and birth year from but there is no father listed in any of the milktary records I can find on ancestry.  The year 1879 fits in with his age of 24 he had on his marriage certificate in 1904.  There is a rumour in the family he could have been adopted into the Vernon family so maybe that's why I'm completely stuck! My grandmother remembers something about some family named "Bates" that her father "Frank George Vernon" Junior used to refer to as his 'cousins'.  she wondered if that had something to do with Frank senior.  I have found a Douglas Vernon living with Frank in 1919 his regimental number was 549794 off the electoral roll but I can find any military records for him either!

Not sure whether this is going to confuse things even more, however Douglas Vernon was also Douglas Hassall & appears under that name in the 1918 Absentee list  living with Frank Vernon.
Douglas Hassall no. 12776 Devonshire Regt. transferred to the Lab. Corps no. 549794.
Looking at Frank's attestation doesn't give P.O.B only age & address at the time so I'm not sure where the St. Martin's has come from.

Well, what a confusing lot! I haven't come across anything quite so baffling in the 500 odd other people in my family tree! It's so annoying to be stuck on so recent a person!  The P.O.B I got for Frank was from discharge documents from the labour corps.   Can I attach something off ancestry or is that copywright?

Hope this has worked.  I have attached the page from the pension records.  Its quite hard to read the Place of Birth but I think it says St Martin, Warwick.

Definitely St. Martin's.
His attestation says he was C of E but there are no Baptisms at St. Martin's for Vernon after 1849 so neither he or his family were Baptised there.
