*COMPLETED*broken media link roots magic 4
« on: Wednesday 28 August 13 17:33 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have roots magic 4 installed on my computer and find it very easy to use except for one thing:

I have a lot of documents on my hard drive, and each time I add one on to my media gallery it has a large broken chain across it, and my programme tells me it cannot locate it!

It seems to go on okay as I can actually view it when I have first scanned it on, it's when I go back to it that I see the broken media sign!

I hope somebody can advise me, as I have wasted so many hours scanning on and adding documents that it's becoming frustrating! :(

Don't worry you haven't wasted time. the most likely explaination is that you have either moved the documents or the folder which results in RM looking in the wrong place hence the visual broken chain you see.
It happens to me as I keep everything including my RM file on an external drive so that I can access it on my pc or my laptop. While on the pc, my external drive is located as I: drive, on my laptop it is on J: drive, The drive letter depends on which usb slot I connect it to... Unfortunately the I: drive on my laptop is assigned to something else :(

But all is not lost, you can fix the broken links in a couple of clicks   :)
Select lists at the top of RM, then media gallery.
Wait for the window to populate with your links... Or broken links ;D
Select the tools button, top right
Now select Fix broken media links
Wait for RM to search and fix your links, it takes a minute or two.

Thats it  ;D

Broken links can also occur if you rename a file.

The two links I show here are because I renamed the files.  If you look at the right hand pane, it shows the original path you saved, this is where RM is looking for the document.

Hi jc26red

You are an absolute star!!

I worked through all of your steps on RM 4, and after a short time it had found 139 missing links.  It then went on to say it was relinking media, and then all of those horrible broken chains disappeared before my eyes!!

Thank you  so much

You're welcome Gill.  I have to admit, I had that same sinking feeling and panic when it happened to me the first time and such a relief to get the lnks back without spending hours doing it manually.
