j brooks reg no 115034
« on: Friday 30 August 13 17:21 BST (UK) »
I was hoping someone may be able to help me find information on J Brooks who was awarded the Victory Medal during WWI. The inscription on the medal says 115034 GNR.J.Brooks R.A. Does that mean he was a gunner with the Royal Artiilery? I'd like to find out whatever I can about this man.

Thanks in advance,
Amy.

That is exactly what he was - a Gunner [private soldier] in the Royal Artillery.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Trelawn1984 - the Royal Artillery Museum at http://www.firepower.org.uk/ has resources and records that will be of great use to you in your research - whether you are able to visit them in Woolwich, or deal remotely by email.  With his serial number you are well on the way.....
I found them most useful in my RA Research.

Hi medal card says his name was John Brooks. He would have had two medals - the Victory Medal and the British Medal.  He wasn't awarded the 14/15 Star which means he was not sent abroad until after 31st December 1915

If the six-digit number is the only number on the medal card it suggests he was conscripted after March 1917 when six-digit numbers were introduced.

If his record is not on Ancestry they were lost in a fire in 1940. Check both the service records and pensions. Other that that there are no other military records.
