BMD certs
« on: Saturday 31 August 13 18:44 BST (UK) »
I am bit stupid here....

When I obtained BMD certs from local Register Office, I found that staff of today  copied the details in their handwriting onto the blank certs instead of copies of original BMD certs. Oops.  ::)

Where do we orfer BMD certs locally that have original handwriting on them - is it County Record Office and Kew?

Hi,

I get mine from GRO, cost £9.25. Kew does not hold BMD certificates.

Right I'm going to stick my neck out here.....I'm sure the ones from the GRO are 'a certified copy' - but not a photocopy.

But when I emailed a Register Office where a couple got married (a long time ago, haven't followed it up yet) I'm sure I was told they could either supply a written copy, or a photocopy of the original (which is what I - and you - would want.)

For church marriages, the register is kept by the church.

I think..... !

Pat

Edit - hope I haven't misunderstood the question - and there are lots of knowledgeable people on here who will know better!

I have one or two typed ones from GRO, modern ones;  the rest are copies (photocopies?) of the record held by GRO but not copies of the original.

You can find some marriage parish records (original handwriting) on subscription sites (Ancestry, FindMyPast).

The GRO has no access to the original registers. A number of local Register Offices have the ability to produce photocopies of the original registers. Sunderland local Register Office have always provided me with photocopies of the original marriage certificate, with the original signatures.
This is what the Sunderland Registrars say;
"With all family history marriage applications we try to offer a photocopy of the original entry onto a certificate, the only time that this is not possible is if the entry has an error/correction in it which means we have to handwrite the certificate."
Their policy is to write out the birth certificates by hand as each birth entry is alongside several others and they will not issue the whole photocopied document with extraneous information. They say that the only *usual* circumstance that they will provide a photocopy of the original is if part of the entry is unclear and there is a risk that they would transcribe something incorrectly.
