Joseph Elliott
« on: Saturday 31 August 13 22:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have found my Great Grand Uncle Joseph Elliott born 1896 in Durham City on the England and Wales Census 1901 and 1911. On the 1911 census he is the oldest son (15) and a Coal Miner Cope Lad. Son of Joseph and Maria Elliott he had several siblings in 1911 John Edward,Annice,Mary Lizzie and there is a boarder Arthur Nelson. He was supposed to be on the war memorial in Birtley Crem but he can't be found? Why might this be?

I'm trying to find him after 1911?

Any help much apreciated,

Fran

A tree on Ancestry has his birth as 28 July 1895 at Durham, and his death 13 November 1916, with memorial at Thiepval, Somme, France. However, they may not have picked the right Joseph. Commonwealth War Graves web site has a lot of Joseph Elliotts so would be worth searching through them to see if you can find the right one.

You could try contacting the Birtley Heritage Group to see if they can help with the plaque (or suggest who can)

http://www.ourgateshead.org/news/update-birtley-heritage-group

(They do have a bit on their site suggesting they have looked into \ are looking into this area)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

That Joseph Elliott seems to have been a Petty Officer in the Royal Naval Reserve, it 'may' have been him but doubtful that a boy working in the pit in 1911 would be a Petty Officer 5 years later.

Where did you get the information that he was remembered on the War Memorial in Birtley?
Do you have a WW1 service record for him? or have you found him on the lists of soldiers who died in WW1?

Boo - that's why I thought it might be wrong. But the War Graves web site has several other Joseph Elliotts so would be worth searching through them all.

:-[ Oh dear! I just read how I worded it.

I was told by a family member that he was supposed to be on the memorial but when he went to check he didn't see him. He was told this growing up by John Edward.

Hello,

This is a long shot but I did find a Military record on Ancestry for a Joseph Elliott at age 20,Chester-le-street. I am wondering if this could be him in 1915? ??? Not to sure about the trade?

Any help much appreciated,

Francesca
