Looking for a Rainbow
« on: Sunday 01 September 13 08:33 BST (UK) »
Henry(Harry) Rainbow
B:
1890 in Shefford, Beds

Any one know where to start looking please as I cannot find this person. Where is Shefford and would it have a Church to search for baptism?
Any help welcome.
Thank you,
Josie

Seem to be Biggleswade District Families ? (The correct Regn District for Shefford)

Births Jun 1890

Rainbow  Ann     Biggleswade  3b 356
Rainbow  Frank     Biggleswade  3b 358
Rainbow  Harry     Biggleswade  3b 363
Rainbow  Miriam     Biggleswade  3b 359

Theres also a Harry born 1888 in that District, so unsurprisingly theres a choice on the 1891 census, both in Biggleswade Dist., one in Meppershall and one in Clifton ...

We need to differentiate (no explicit link to Shefford in 1891 or 1901) age shown may be out a year or so ... - do you know any more, like who and when he married - Fathers name would be on Marriage Cert

Added: There are References to SHEFFORD in the last census available (Meppersall - near Shefford, and Clifton Road, Shefford), when both Harrys are still unmarried. So I guess its a small area we dealing with ?

Departure
    1923 10 Aug Age: 33
    Southampton, England
Age: 33. Home address. 185 Knox Road, Wellingborough. Profession. Harvester.
This is he when he went to Canada.
He married
Sarah Jane Smith B: 1893 in Skipton, Yorkshire
Marriage was Wellingborough.
He died 1968 in Northamptonshire. Just after the dates covered by Probate records.
Looks like I might have to get the marriage cert but was hoping to spare the expense. ( Don't we all). Reason why I was looking forward to a miracle and finding baptism.
At least you have narrowed it down to 2 and I have the reg district.
Many thanks
Regards, Josie.

In 1901 and 1911 the two Harrys are still unmarried, birthplaces Meppershall and Clifton respectively. No reference to Shefford in any census. You need the marriage cert to get the father's name in order to differentiate them.

Try https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=ll to find Shefford, Meppershall and Clifton.

Very many thanks. Don't know how I missed that. It all fits.
For info to you all; The Harry born 1888 died in 1963 aged 75 so reckon that clears that one up. Must now send for marriage cert to prove the Harry with parents Joe and Matilda is the right one.
Many thanks.
Josie.

Did they have a daughter called Vera?

Edited.

There is a passenger list for the ship Athenia that has Sarah aged 31 and a child Vera aged 9 that departed from Liverpool to Quebec on 25/04/1924.
Address given was 50 Melton Road Wellingborough.

Yes, I know that's what you wrote. Meppershall is undeniably near Shefford, but in 1911 they were, and still are, two separate parishes. And notwithstanding that Joe Rainbow gave his postal address as Clifton Rd, Shefford, in 1911, it must have been in the parish of Clifton as that's where he was enumerated. And he and all of his children gave Clifton, not Shefford, as their birthplace, unsurprising as in 1891 he was living in Clifton Fields, Clifton, and it's 1890 that's the key date. Where he was living in 1911 is irrelevant. But even though one gave near Shefford as his postal address and the other gave a postal address of Shefford it still gets us nowhere in trying to decide which one is Josie's.

I was merely trying to make the point that neither of the Harrys lived in the enumeration parish of Shefford, or gave Shefford as their birthplace, which is where Josie gave as the birthplace. If you look at googlemaps you'll see that Clifton and Meppershall adjoin Shefford.
