looking for an Ernest Cliff born 1881 in Sheffield. He was the son of Walter Cliff and Clara Watson.

I have found Ernest on all censuses but the 1901 census and would really like to find him, can anyone help?

He could have been in South Africa for the Boer War. The Second Boer War was fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902. The British Army started off with 12,546 men in South Africa when the war began, but the number of officers and men actually employed from first to last, during the war, was officially given as 448,435.
