May and Shoyswell families of East Sussex
« on: Wednesday 04 September 13 18:25 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone have any information on the May family of Wadhurst, East Sussex and the Shoyswell family of Etchingham, East Sussex.  I would like to confirm that Richard May, born 1448, married Alice Shoyswell and also that John de Shoyswell, (1375 - 1425) married Agnes Maltravors.  I have seen other people's trees with these names but haven't seen actual proof from a document.

Many thanks
Lindsey

Hi Lindsey,

I have looked at the Visitation of Sussex and County Genealogies of Sussex but no help I am afraid. The visitation does not go far back enough in the Shoyswell line and the Genealogies of Sussex concentrates on the male line and doesn't show wives!

These dates are prior to the existence of most parish registers so it would be interesting to discover how they were found.
Worth looking at the A2A site as there are various hits for the name Shoyswell in the South East region.

Hi

Many thanks for the National Archives information I have had an interesting couple of hours looking through them.

I too would like to discover how these dates were found - can only think the names were found in wills or some kind of old documents but I am unable to find any.

Thanks again
Lindsey
