I'm stuck - can anyone help?
« on: Saturday 07 September 13 12:45 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with tracing these ancestors - I'm going around in circles and coming up with nothing.
No birth records for Jacob Coles (1847) born in hereford or John Coles 1854 born in Cardiff but both appear on the 1861 census living with their widowed mother Elizabeth in Cardiff.  There is one record for Jacob Coles (parents Samuel and Ann)  born in Herefordshire but this isn't my Jacob.  Elizabeth (1816 born on Herefordshire)  was apparently married to James Coles according to someone's tree on Ancestry but cannot find them on the 1851 census and cannot find a marriage.  I know that registering a birth and marriage didn't become compulsory until 1875 so they may not be named anywhere but I'm not sure on how to continue.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received.  Many thanks

There is a Jacob Cole registered in the June quarter of 1847 in Hereford listed on FreeBmd.  Could this be him?

There are also 4 John Cole registrations, two in Hereford and two in Cardiff during the decade, but none of the dates are 1854.

Hope this helps?

Unfortunately the Jacob Cole listed on Freebmd in 1847 in Herefordshire, isn't my Jacob - my Jacob's parents were James and Elizabeth but thanks both for your replies.

Does he give a fathers name on his marriage certificate.  Do you have Elizabeth on later census

The father's name on the marriage certificate is James (blacksmith) and it is the Jacob in Cardiff married to Mary Ann

I wonder if this is the family in 1851,in Monmouthshire?

Mum may have been Elizabeth Ann, or Ann Elizabeth, but with the oldest son being James,it could suggest that was his dad's name. Kids all born Longtown Herefordshire.

Ann Cole    35
Mary Ann Cole    15
James Cole    14
Jacob Cole    3
