*COMPLETED* 1871 Census query for Welsh
« on: Sunday 08 September 13 03:18 BST (UK) »
Hello
Wondering if someone can help clarify please.

I have located an 1871 census document with the following details on Ancestry but cannot find this on Scotlandspeople.  Hoping someone will head me in the right direction as I am after clarification of the occupation of William Welsh which on Ancestry.com is ??Angine Emita.  I thought I would use Scotlandspeople to access the census but cannot find the correct William who was born in Kilbarchan not Glasgow, Lanark, Dumfries

Ancestrydetails:
1871 Census
William Welsh b abt  1823 age 48  Wool weaver
France Welsh b abt  1835 age 36   Wool Winder
William Welsh b abt  1850 age 21   Angine Emita
John Welsh     b abt 1855       16   Wool weaver
Jessie Welsh                            2
Jean Welsh                              1

Thank you taking the time to read my query.
Cheers

Not often that seemingly, A* is right and SP wrong   ;D

They are  listed under surname HEISH in SP!!

Cheers

PS: do let us know what an Angine Amita is, though  ;D

Hi
Wow what a supersleuth you are.  Thank you so much, I tried all sorts of combinations but did not come up with that, did you use the wildcard option.  :)  I will remember that maybe a W could look like an H given the style of writing.  The Record is extremely hard to read so maybe A did a very very good job.
I am picking the occupation has something to do with blacksmithing, which is what he did when he came to New Zealnd.  Grasping at straws but maybe angine = engine or equine?!?.

Will certainly advise you if I get any better occupation titles.  I have looked at old occupation lists but to no avail.

Again many thanks

Hi

;D Yes the wildcard * was well used! I think I had quickly figgered  *E*SH to start with,  that it went with all the forenames in the family in the right location with the right ages,  then just went thru the alphabet for each *  till I got to HE*SH and then,  HEISH.

If the choice was Engine or Equine, definitely I would go with Engine.  If you have now gotten the original off SP, perhaps posting a snip of the rogue occupation may get results if one of us are able to make sense of it :-)

Cheers

Thank you Ambly for your help.
I have posted an attachment in the deciphering forum and 2 replies have come back confirming my thoughts today that it may be an Engine Smith (I enlarged the print and played around with the darkness which made it a bit clearer!).  Apparently this is an old occupation where blacksmith skills were applied to metal work skills required with early engines etc.  Makes perfect sense to me know  :)

Hope this helps someone else at some stage.
Cheers

Hi Blacksmithy

Had a look at the image on:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=662290.0

And totally agree with Engine Smith - the ' _ngine  _mith' looked quite clear  but that may be because I was primed to 'see' that  ;D  ;D

Thanks Ambly
the more I looked at it (in different orientations!!!) it seemed to be clearer.  I now I will see what I can come up with as a trade apprenticeship etc.
Thanks for your input.
Kindest regards
Blacksmithy!
