B M D Registration Districts
« on: Sunday 08 September 13 10:34 BST (UK) »
Hello,  I wonder can anyone tell me about old registration districts ? I have someone born at Hough-on-the-Hill, in 1856, but can't find a record for her birth, there IS a birth registered at New Sleaford, that fits, would Hough have come under Sleaford reg. district in 1856 ?......any help appreciated....Del.

Hi

Just a reminder that, although civil registration started in 1837, it wasn't compulsory to register births until 1875 so there may not be a birth cert to find.

In these cases, baptisms and marriage entries and census details will be all you have to go on.

Have a look at the census to see if you can find the child whose birth is registered in 1865. Double check to make sure the child didn't die in infancy.

According to Phillimores Atlas Hough on the Hill came under Grantham reg district.

You could always try the Lincs registration service (details can be found on the registrar page of the Lincs County Council website).
They will supply a scan of the original register for bmd events throughout the county are are quicker than the GRO (who supply transcribed records anyway, not copies of the original register), the only drawback is wedding certs, you have to give the marriage venue as each church has it's own register.

Thank you for the replies, as I suspected, Hough-on-the-Hill was in the Grantham reg. district, I suppose she could have been born there, and the birth registered elsewhere, would the law have allowed that ?.......I have come across it before, I cannot find this lady on either the 1861 or 71 census, she reappears in 1881, at Great Gonerby, as the wife of John Ayto, on all census returns, 81, 91, 01, and the one after that, she is given as being born at Hough........Del.
