Do you think the name might have been GRAINGER? There are several Grangers in Nottingham c1940 in the telephone book (at Ancestry), but only one Grainger.
Since, reading between the lines, the sensitive nature of your inquiry is clear, I won't put any identifying info here.
If you have an Ancestry subscription, go here:
http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1025and search for surname gra*nger in Nottingham Nottinghamshire 1940 +/-2.
Unfortunately, that Grainger doesn't seem to show up on the search (the transcriptions are by machine and are terrible). But if you find the listing for "Browning Grainger" (a London firm of engineers) in Nottingham 1939 and go to the image for that listing, you will see the one Mr Grainger, who had a business in Eastwood, and the full list of Grangers, all in the same column.
Occupations include Textiles, Farmer, Warehouseman, Draper, and Lace.
I have a similar puzzle with a family named Lewis who were in Nottingham or Mansfield around 1890 ... when my gr-grmother, an unmarried domestic servant at the time, was working for them. Of historical interest only for me (my great-aunt had a rather sad life with her stepfather, but she adored her niece and nephews and their kids, and we her, so the question does interest me); a more immediate interest for you I think. Let me know, if that would help.
edit ... an interesting candidate, I'll send you some info by PM.
