Susan Evelyn and Ernst Otto WAGNER, Wentachee, Washington State
« on: Monday 16 September 13 23:59 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a marriage for these two, with no luck so far. Ernst was a widower and Susan's previous name was Callaghan or Callahan. I'm inclined to think they never married, except on a ship manifest of them arriving in Vancouver from NZ there is a note saying they were both naturalised US Citizens (she by virtue of her husband's naturalisation) so would they have had to prove they were married when naturalised. Can you find people's naturalisation details online, and if so, where would you look.

Hi

I see the travel you're referring to in 1938, April on the 'Aorangi', which says he was
naturalised US Citizen, Superior Court of Washington, 16th October 1914....

The had made an earlier trip in 1930: Arrived Vancouver 22 May 1930, from Auckland NZ
ERNEST O WAGNER: Nat USC  Washington 1900
SUSAN E WAGNER: USC by Marriage, 14 Dec 1915  (or 1916 )

Cheers

I don't think finding his Naturalisation is going to help ....

In 1900 & 1910, Ernest was in Wenatchee, Chelan Cty, Washington with his first wife, Mary and their children. In both, he is declared to be NA (Naturalised)

In 1920,  Susan is his wife.  And it is states he was naturalised in 1895.

Prior to 1922, in the most simple terms a woman became naturalised just because she married a US citizen, born or naturalised.

http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/1998/summer/women-and-naturalization-1.html
''…..under the 1855 law, an immigrant woman instantly became a U.S. citizen at the moment a judge's order naturalized her immigrant husband. If her husband naturalized prior to September 27, 1906, the woman may or may not be mentioned on the record which actually granted her citizenship. Her only proof of U.S. citizenship would be a combination of the marriage certificate and her husband's naturalization record. Prior to 1922, this provision applied to women regardless of their place of residence…..."

What would be interesting is:  if after Sep 1922, Susan applied to be Naturalized USC  in her own right....(read further down the page on that link).

In 1913,  they arrive in Vancouver on the "Makura", listed next to each other.
Ernest O WAGNER, married
Mrs Susan E CALLAHAN 38, married
It says he was Naturalised in Chelan Cty, Washington in  March 1893, and she is Naturalised by her marriage.

On her  1953 Death/Burial record, it said her father was named Charles BISHOP. Mother: Mary FRASER (also on her death record in the archives link, further below)

Susan Eva BISHOP
Birth registered 1875, NZ. Father: Charles, Mother: Mary

His first wife didn't die until 1928. In 1920 Census, she said she (Mary Anna) is divorced.

Can't see a Naturalization  for him nor a marriage,  here:

These people are really confusing me :(

I might think on this for a day or so to find where I go next. Both Susan (1953) and Ernst died in Wenatchee (or Chelan) Ernst is buried with Mary Ann. If Susan and Ernst married you'd think there would be a marriage to find?

I'm also trying to find what happened to Susan's previous husband, Joseph Charles Callaghan/Callahan - his son Charles Preston Callaghan/Callahan and grandson Charles Latimer Callahan b 1932 both lived in Seattle, and CL later went to Washington University, and later worked for Boeing in Seattle. I haven't found JC in NZ and apparently he just disappeared in abt 1906 (this from CL Callahan who is my cousin.

Lots of records on familysearch.org (look for united states --> washington - many are image sets, which are not searchable by name/from the top page).

Under "Washington, County Records, 1856-2009"
There are indexes/records for both marriages and marriage licenses for Chelan - didn't see anything under Wagner there so I'm guessing if they married it was elsewhere (understandable if Mary was still in the picture!)

I see that Susan married  Edwin Henry Sarah in 1893 and then Joseph Charles Callaghan  in 1901 - just mentioning in case she dropped the Callaghan name at some point.

Interesting to see that she was listed as US citizen by marriage when she arrived as Callahan in 1913 - fits with this NZ newspaper mention of the marriage that has Joseph/Charles as from San Francisco:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0w63/

This would mean that she was a US citizen by her second marriage, even if the marriage with Ernest never materialised (it might still be found somewhere, just not on any of the readily available indexes).

Finding the divorce between Ern(e)st and Mary Ann could help.
