Hill Family, East Lothian & Roxburghshire - Help Needed Please!
« on: Friday 20 September 13 22:51 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Hope I'm putting this in the right place as it covers more than the one county & rather than cause confusion by posting more than the once!

My Hill family have been causing me a headache for years & recently some of what I thought was my family history I found wasn't. Allow me to explain!

My 4x gt grandparents James Hill & Elizabeth/Elspeth Aitchison married in Dunbar, East Lothian on 8th April 1803. Grooms occupation given as labourer. Grooms Parish given as Dunbar & Brides Parish given as Morebattle (Roxburghshire.)

Their first child William Hill was born 5th May 1805 & baptised at Dunbar on 13th May 1805. Then nothing until 1819 when a Son Ninian Hills was born on 18th July 1819 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire & then another Son George Hills (my 3x gt grandfather) born 14th December 1821 also at Yetholm.

There was apparently another son James Hill but I have not as yet been able to prove this either way.

On William's baptism record Parents are given as James Hill & Elizabeth Aitchison whereas on both Ninian & George's the parents are recorded as James Hills & Elspath Aitchison.

Where were they between 1805 & 1819? Were there any other children?

Also the 1821 baptism record is the last record I have of both James & Elizabeth/Elspath.

I know that Ninian married in Greenlaw in 1845 to Mary Fox & that George married in Northumberland in 1846 to Isabella Parker.

William, other than his baptism record, I know nothing about.

I would like to see if at long last my Hill/Hills family could be pushed back a bit further.

Any and all help with this would be very gratefully received indeed!

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Hi David,
Have you found any of the family on the 1841 Census?

Hi Looby,

Many thanks for your reply, very much appreciated!

Sadly the only Census I have for the family is Ninian & Wife Mary in 1851 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire. Other than that unfortunately no. They have been rather difficult to pin down!

Kind regards

Hi again,
Just quickly looking at the English 1841 Census on Familysearch threw up a couple of interesting results https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M7WF-7ZL
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M7WC-S8N

I know the age is out for George by a couple of years but we know how reliable Census ages are :)
This George is at Horton, Northhumberland as are a James Hill born 1811 Scotland - a Ninian Hill b.1831, James Hill b.1835, Ephemia Hill b.1836 all Scotland. Maybe these people are worth looking at?

Hi Looby,

Many thanks indeed for your reply, very much appreciated!

That George in Horton must be him as that is where he married Isabella Parker in 1846!

Is this George living with James Hill etc? If so brother & cousins?

The E Hills in Berwick I will definately take a look at too.

Many thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi David,
The information on Familysearch does not tell me if all these people are related or living at the same address -
here is link to George https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M7WC-S8N
and link to James https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M7WC-S8C

I think you would need to look at original or find another website that has a transcription of the 1841.

Just found Ninian Hill on 1851 Census at Morebattle and interestingly he has a daughter aged 1 called Euphemia - similar to Ephemia aged approx 6 in Horton Northumberland. Knowing the Scottish naming tradition that could be a family name.

One last post before I head to bed  ;D
a  birth for a Euphemia Hill at Yetholm on 17th April 1833 to James Hill and Janet Brown. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XT1V-SZ
Wonder if that's the girl on England's 1841 at Horton Northumberland?
Also a birth of a James Hills https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYWK-NB2
Good luck with your research,
Goodnight
Looby :)

Hi Looby,

Many thanks, yep sorry assumed you were looking at originals! Ooops!! :-[

Will see if I can find a transcription or get a look at the original.

Yup, that's Ninian all right with wife & two daughters. Alison born 24th March 1848, Euphemia born 5th January 1850 & another daughter was Isabella born 17th October 1852 all in Morebattle.

The 1852 birth/baptism is the last record that I have of Ninian & Mary as they along with daughter Alison disappear off the face of the earth! Euphemia & Isabella can be found on census returns until 1871/1881 respectively.

As a family they have been a real pain appearing & disappearing with alarming regularity!

Just caught your last post, yep I am aware of that couple, but haven't ever been able to confirm or otherwise that they are family or not!

Many thanks for your help once again.

Kind regards

David
