Any descendants of James Campbell & Mary Steel(e) South Uist, INV ?
« on: Sunday 22 September 13 17:30 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for any descendants of (ages from census)

James Campbell (c1781-c1845) & Mary Steel(e) (c1781 - c1845)

I have 2 daughters:

Isabella Campbell b c1786-1801 (dates from census' & death) - d 1874
Mary Campbell b c1821 - 1826 (dates from census' & death) - d 1879

I feel there must be other siblings in that time frame which is at least 20 yrs or was Mary the daughter of Isabella prior to marriage?

Isabella married John Cumming 1823 Bornish, S/Uist

Mary married Norman MacMillan 1844, Bornish, S/Uist

Any info. on descendants will be gratefully received  :)

Regards,

Anne Marie.

Hi,
Have you found James Campbell on the 1841 Census?

There is a 80 year old James Campbell at North Boisdle (transcribed spelling), South Uist- he's a Pentioner ??? (again as transcribed)
Living with him is Mary Campbell aged 60, Mary Campbell aged 15 and John Cumming aged 14, Male Servant. All born Invernesshire.

Looby  :)

Hi Looby,

I have the 1841 with James & Mary but they seem to have died prior to 1851 (I corrected my typo's).

John Cumming in 1841 was their grandson, son of Isabella & John (my ggg grandparents).

James was not that common as a forename in Uist yet neither daughters named a son after their father which is really strange.

To my knowledge Mary had only 1 son (Dougal(d)) yet her hubby's father was Malcolm & her own father James  ???

I have only come across 2/3 other James Campbell's - no connection to date.

Both girl's named daughter's Mary after their mother.

Mary (MacMillan) named 2 daughter's Mary as her mother-in-law was Mary too.

However, although no James which was odd, both girls named a son Dougal(d) & I'm thinking this Dougal(d) was on the mother Mary's side?

Isabella's grandaughter (my g grandmother) married a Steel(e) and there is a Dougal(d) in that line (supposedly), so Mary Steel(e) may or may not have been the sister of Dougal(d).

As the records don't stretch back far enough, I will never know but would love to know if Isabella & Mary had siblings?

Campbell was a common surname so there is a good chance of having other relations.

James Campbell's ggg grandaughter (my fathers cousin) also married a Campbell.

If only I could knit them all together, I would have a nice pattern  ;D

I noticed the 3 Mary's on the 1851 Census - I thought there had been a transcription error wuth two girls called Mary ;D That must have made for a lot of misunderstandings !!! Poor Norman shouting "Mary" had 3 heads turning!!
There seems to be a big age difference between James and Mary Steel (e). Do you have their marriage? Was it possible James was not the girls father but was maybe a grandfather??
That might explain no baby James ???

Looby :)

To be honest Looby the age gap seems legit as both girls have the same parent's names on their death certs.
Too far back for James & Mary's marriage which would have been at least c 1800 going by the age gap & census & death certs. as marriage certs. didn't give ages then.
I have thought of all those things but no records to relate to.................that was why I wondered if Mary was an illegitimate daughter of my Isabella but that is very doubtful to be honest but not impossible.

I was hoping someone else doing a Campbell line would recognise the name as a leaf on their tree as it's my last resort basically.

I forgot to add.............................

There is NO James all the way down my direct line from Isabella.

I haven't traced down Mary's line so there may well be a James from her line......yet to be discovered  ;D

Who is the 15 year old Mary Campbell on this 1841 ? Is this daughter Mary who is aged 32 on the 1851? I know ages can be unreliable on the Censuses but she has aged 17 years in 10!

Anne Marie,
Have you read the Parish Report of South Uist written in 1837 , I think. It makes an interesting read and describes island life. There is also a report from approx.1791-1799. People's names are not mentioned , but there is an explanation as to why you are finding no BMD's.
