Hoggs - Berwick baptisms
« on: Monday 23 September 13 11:51 BST (UK) »
Hi :D - another go at filling holes!
William Hogg (1716/8 - 1763) and Frances Alder (1719 - 1791), married in 1749.  I have found 4 of their children, all in Berwick-upon-Tweed, and know quite a bit about them.
•   Andrew (b1754): Married Frances Tindall
•   Robert Alder (1756-1759)
•   Christian (1758-1831): Married Walter Rowland
•   Frances (1759-1838): married Thomas How.
Then I get a copy of Andrew Hogg's Will (William's father) from 1774 and I find:
"Also I give and bequeath unto my granddaughters Isabella Hogg, Christian Hogg, Frances Hogg and Mary Hogg daughters of my son William Hogg and Frances Hogg". I have not been able to find any trace of Isabella and Mary that are daughters of William.  And they presumably would still be alive in 1774!
Any ideas?

cheers Barbara

Thanks Boo   :) It amazes me sometimes that some people can be so completely under the radar like this.  I suppose that's where the challenge is in all this!

Appreciate your help

cheers Barbara

Hi Michael
I dont know - the records I have just say Berwick-upon-Tweed.  But the parents (William and Frances) and William's father Andrew were both buried in Holy Trinity, so suspect it was that one.

The entries on the Family Search website quote film 94987,949788 which is listed in the catalogue as:
Parish register transcripts 1573-1812
Authors: Church of England Parish Church of Berwick upon Tweed (Northumberland)

Which would be Holy Trinity.

The notes for the film say
Microfilm copy of typescript and handwritten transcriptions of parish registers in the Public Reference Library, Newcastle upon Tyne, England

Which means the entries on Family Search are a transcription of a transcription (I think!) so more room than usual for errors / omissions.

Thanks Boo - sounds like I need to go to the library at Newcastle to check - maybe when I'm in the UK next year.

Barbara,

Yes if you get the chance to visit Newcastle/Newcastle Central Library, take it!
But also try to get to Northumberland County Record Office, at Woodhorn, and
 Berwick upon Tweed Record Office.

Reason being that as Bo suspected, Newcastle Library holdings for Berwick Parish
( Church of England), Holy Trinity, are transcriptions of transcriptions, in very brief form.
Whereas Woodhorn and Berwick offices will hold film of actual church registers.

Today I had a browse through Newcastle Library's holdings of Holy Trinity ( on fiche)
I saw baptisms for Andrew 13 Jan 1754, Robert Alder 17 June 1756,
 Christian 23 May 1758 and Frances 10 June 1759.

The baptisms of Robert, Christian and Frances were annotated with abbreviations for
 Dissenter.

So perhaps the other children were baptised in the relevant non-Church of England church/es ?

In fact it is possible that the baptisms of the four children above, although recorded* in
the Parish Church,  were baptised in the appropriate "Dissenter" church.

* For reasons such as Poor Law requirements.

A George Alder was baptising several children in same era in Holy Trinity

So too was an Alexander Hogg.

Thanks Michael - I'm hoping to pay a visit to Berwick next June to do a bit of personal hunting there.  Sounds like it may be of more used than Newcastle for this. Every so often in the family there is a R Catholic baptism found, so it is possible they were actually baptised there - but the family I've found all seem to be buried at Holy Trinity, so I would have thought they would all be baptised there as well.

BTW - George Alder is Frances Alder's brother - I've found that much out as I've tripped over him before.  Not sure about Alexander - not one of mine that I know of, but Hogg was a very common name in the area!

Thanks again
Barbara
