Angus Mackenzie b.1842 Ross-shire, Scotland

Hello,
I am trying to trace one of my relatives who left Scotland around 1860 and travelled south to Scarborough, North Yorkshire and became a police constable.

As far as his Scottish roots are concerned all I can find out is that he was born in 1842 in Ross-shire, and his father was called Alexander and was a farmer. I can't find out who his mother was, or if he had any brothers and sisters.

Angus married Elizabeth Clunas in Scarborough in 1865 when they were both aged 23. They went on to have seven children and both died in Scarborough during the First World War.

I have been able to find plenty of information on Angus during his Scarborough years but I am struggling with the details of his Scottish origins. Can anyone help?

This is the 1841 census for Urray - Alexander was an agricultural labourer - not a farmer.  N against name shows not b Ross & Cromarty but born elsewhere in Scotland.  All others b Ross

Think I've found the family at 62 Huntly Street, Inverness on the 1851 Census- on Freecen they have been transcribed as McKensie

All spellings and relationships are as transcribed although there is a note in the right hand side of the transcriptions querying Angus, Ann, Mary and Peter's  relationship to the head of the household. Mary is listed at this household which means the Mary at the hospital may not be Angus's sister. Then again the family may have given her name to the enumerator (notice she is out of age sequence) and the hospital recorded her too - a double listing 
As Peter is recorded as born at Urray the family have only been in Inverness approx. 1 year.

Hi CaroleW. Thanks for the follow up on the 1841 Census. The father - Alexander - may have been a farm labourer then but he might have progressed to being a farmer in later years. On the marriage certificate for his son Angus (married 1865) his father's occupation is listed as "farmer (deceased)". Worth following up. I can't find Angus either! Thanks again.

Hi Looby. Thanks for the information on the Alexander with a son Angus based in Inverness in 1851. This is a new line of equiry but Inverness is right on the edge of Ross-shire (Ross & Cromarty) so it's quite possible the family moved the short distance. It might be more of a leap for Alexander to go from being a farm labourer to a spirit dealer! Thanks again, and I'll follow up your lead.
