John / William / Samuel Hewson 1600s - 1700s
« on: Tuesday 01 October 13 17:32 BST (UK) »
I have confirmed my fifth great grandfather as Samuel Hewson, born 1743 in Sussex.

A series of family trees on Ancestry suggest his father as William Hewson, born 1702, and his grandfather as John Hewson, born 1675.

Somebody has evidently gone and ferreted out this information through parish records or something, so my question is, can anyone here verify these older records, and would marriage records be out of the question for people so old?

William is mentioned with spouse Joan ?, and John is mentioned with spouse Joan Burcher, no marriages given.

Where would I go to investigate old Sussex records?

Many thanks.

Hi,

The best place to find baptismal and burial info is from the Sussex Family History Group (SFHG), they have a database which can give you info like the following:
Samuel Hewson baptised 28 Mar 1743 All Saints East Dean (Chichester) Parents: William and Jane

For marriage info you would have to buy the excellent Sussex Marriage Index available from SFHG, however it does not have entries for William or John which might suggest they were married outside the county.

SFHG for baptism for William is in nearby Singleton in 1702 and includes a sibling Mary in 1704.
Actual baptismal dates are given and annual membership of SFHG is very reasonable.
Some Singleton records on the IGI index abbreviate John to Jno, so that may give cause for problems

There are no other mentions of John (or wife Joane) indicating the earlier records of their baptisms and marriage are out of County as Swebby suggests. Were John or William in occupations that indicated mobility? Given that the Chichester area abuts Hampshire, that might also be a good place to start looking for them.

I see membership of SFHG runs annually, from each January. Perhaps as it is already October, I might wait till Jan 2014 to join them. They do seem to have comprehensive records.

Many thanks for all your help, I really am digging far into history for these ones! Now, I wonder is there a similar society for Hampshire records...?

I think Knightroots is the best you will get for Hampshire.
