Marion ? b 1851 Campsie, Stirlingshire
« on: Thursday 03 October 13 17:48 BST (UK) »
I am seeking the maiden name of Marion ? born 1851 in Campsie Stirlingshire. Unable to find her on Scottish census prior to marriage which was to George Robertson. George was born in Glasgow in 1962. In 1901 census they have 3 children George, William and Jeanie Mch.  Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Hi Patrizia,

Can you clarify George Robertson's year of birth please?

Also, can you give us the ages of each child?

Each of their birth certificates will list their mother's maiden name, so you'd only need to download one of them.

From that, you could search for George & Marion's Marriage Certificate and that would list both sets of parents.

There are only 2 marriages in the whole of Scotland between a George Robertson and a Marion between 1888 and 1892 on Scotland's People Statutory Marriage Index.

The one for George Robertson and a Marion McHoul in Dennistoun, Glasgow in 1889 looks promising as wee Jeanie has a middle name of McH....?

It's always a good idea to get copies of the certificates, especially marriages.

Not only will you get both sets of parents names (including both mother's maiden names), whether the parents are alive/deceased, you'll get occupations, a place of marriage and sometimes the witnesses can be family members.

It will also show which kind of marriage it was, e.g. religious, by declaration etc.

The surname of Marion is according to the 1871 census to be McHord (I guess Mchorl was a typo) however on Ancestry cannot find any of the family in later Scottish census maybe too late last night and I missed them I will look again today - thank you for your help.

If it's census transcriptions you're looking at on Ancestry - be aware that errors in spelling and variants are common, so the information can really only be used as a guide.

Please don't base any of your research on transcriptions!

Yet again, the only source for downloading the actual images is from Scotland's People - Ancestry don't have these.

I suggest you bite the bullet and buy a batch of 30 credits on SP which will cost £7.00.

If you were to download the marriage cert, this would confirm without doubt, the spelling of Marion's surname and with the remaining credits, you could also download one or more of the children's births or one or more census image.

Hi Ann, thank you, yes I agree I need to bite the bullet and pay.  I keep paying yearly subs for ancestry which as worked well on other lines so far but recently started on one of my grandfathers line it is of course a different matter as born in Scotland as you say need to bite the bullet trying to do this on a shoestring is obviously not the answer.
