James Halfhead, Haynes Bedfordshire
« on: Saturday 05 October 13 18:07 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can locate a baptism for a James Halfhead who says on the 1841 and 1851 census that he was born either 1783 or 1785 in Haynes.
There is a Bedford Goal Record for James Halfhead Committed 2 Oct 1841 2 months hard labour for stealing a cask born Haynes living Bedford aged 60 (born 1781) 5ft 2" Brown hair Hazel eyes florid complex, blue mark on upper lip. reads imperfectly. Orderly

I would also be interested in his marriage to an Elizabeth, they had children baptised 1813 onwards St Paul Bedford. I have looked everywere I can without any success.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards

Yes I have wondered that myself.
James Halfhead s of Joseph and Rebecca bap 29 Dec 1828 Haynes Beds

His father may have been;
Joseph Halfhead of Haynes Beds Committed 29 01 1822 aged 44 (born 1778) to Bedford New house of correction for 1 month hard labour offence stealing wood. Labourer 5 ft 5" Sandy hair, sallow complexion lost two front teeth, Orderly. Bedford Goal Record

Joseph and Rebecca had children bap Haynes 1821-1834.
There is a previous baptism for John Halfhead s of Joseph and Kezia bap 24 May 1819 Haynes Beds

There is also
Joseph Halfhead of Haynes Beds Committed 8 Apr 1811 aged 44 (born 1767) to Bedford Old House of correction for 3 months offence snaring. 5'5" Light Brown Hair, Swarthy complex, Orderly Bedford Goal Record

Joseph Halfhead married Jane Young 11 Aug 1790 at Haynes Beds and had children bap there 1792-1796 but the baptism I need for James Halfhead is around 1785 so before this marriage.

On the IGI there seems to be a gap in Halfhead baptisms between 1763-1790. I do not know if this is because the family were not in Haynes then or if there are missing transcriptions.

The transcript doesn't appear to be deficient. There are just no Halfhead entries. Have you considered non-conformity?

Hi BB
Thank you for the clarification that the Haynes transcript is OK, that takes away one question.
Yes, considered NC but the only NC Halfheads I have found was John 1815 and Johnathan 1819 s of Thomas and Charlotte and an Elizabeth no parents all Wesleyan in Luton Beds.

Incidentially, James Halfhead 1783 daughter Janet/Jeanette 1817 was the mother-in-law of Betsey Sabey 1845 Bedford d of Ruth Sabey 1818 Keysoe. Those Sabeys get everywhere!!

Thank you for your interest. Any other ideas??
