As a matter of fact my birth certificate of 1937 says I was born at Poplar Grove. I asked my mother many, many years ago about this and her reply was that it had been the workhouse. I assume that 'Stepping Hill' where I was actually born still had workhouse connotations?

As I understand it Poplar Grove was built around 1901 as an Infirmary and used to take the pressure off the Union Workhouse at Shaw Heath which was full to overflowing and didn't have proper medical facilities.

The link might give you a bit more insight.

In the same vein as hostility towards connections with workhouses, under objection, when needing hospital treatment in the 1970's, my wife's grandmother was sent to St Thomas' hospital in Stockport. She had known it as the workhouse. It still was, to a certain extent. She died there.

Workhouses legally ceased to exist on Monday 31st March 1930, they were then called Public Assistance Institutions.
