50 & 52 Bramhall Lane
« on: Monday 07 October 13 01:01 BST (UK) »
Hi,

On a 1901 census an address of 50 & 52 Bramhall Lane or Bramhall Moor Lane appeared as a convalescent home. Trying to find the name of the convalescent home.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks very much, garstonite and Stan. :)

Had a relative in the convalescent home and hoping to track down some records.

Cheers,

Looks like 50 and 52 is where the car park is now (from google street view).

Might be worth contacting Stockport Library who have some records.  If not they should be able to point you in the right direction (if anything still exists)

Hi Debbie,
I was going to email you with the bits of info I found but as you've posted on the board I'll fill you in here in case other people are interested.
I will of course email you later.

Milly is right about numbers 50-52 being part of Stepping Hill car park now but in the late 1890s those two houses were used by the Union Workhouse which was in Shaw Heath.
The workhouse was full to overflowing and to relieve the pressure on them they had to send patients to other places. This practice continued until 1905 when the new Infirmary opened its doors at Poplar Grove later to become Stepping Hill Hospital
Although on the 1901 census they were being called Convalescent Houses they were still to all intents and purposes the Workhouse.

Pat.

50 & 52 are not in the 1911 census, but in the 1911 Summary Book, between numbers 80 and 46 Bramhall Moor Lane, is the note (Corporation property taken separately) which I assume means in the workhouse return.
