Bromford Village
« on: Wednesday 09 October 13 18:00 BST (UK) »
I have very little information on Edward Robinson, who was born 1873 in Bromford Village according to the 1911 census.  He married Emma Elizabeth Batson in Aston in 1894 and I just don't seem to be able to track down any more info. I know Emma died in 1955 and she was a widow by then, but that's it! She left a reasonable sized estate but I can't find any probate info for Edward.   I'm quite happy to review the census forms to find him in earlier years as a starter, but could someone please point me to the right Parish and Enumeration district for Bromford Village in, say, 1881?  Or 1891? Strangely, I have the same problem for their son, William Henry Robinson.  I can find his birth in 1896, entries on the 1901 and 1911 census, then he just disappears too.

Other censuses have him born in Birmingham?! ::)

1891 has an Edward Robinson, aged 18, a Private in the Infantry, based in Aldershot.
Class:  RG12; Piece:  567; Folio:  115; Page:  36

Page 1 says Scottish Rifles, quartered in the West Infantry Barracks, Aldershot.

From Wikipedia:
Bromford is an industrial area of Birmingham, situated between Ward End, Alum Rock, Hodge Hill, Washwood Heath, Shard End, Stechford and Erdington.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Yes, that looks like a possibility, thank you.  With just his age at the time of the 1911 census it's hard to know if he was born in 1872 or 1873.  I'll see if I can find a corresponding birth although there is an 1881 census entry which suggests his mother might be Priscilla Robinson, living in Lancashire at that point, described as a widow.  I'll look a bit more closely at her.

I thought I might find details of his family via the marriage records on ancestry but they were married in Aston at St Peter & St Paul's and I don't think that counted as Birmingham as far as the new online marriage register for Birmingham goes.  I probably need to get hold of their marriage certificate to see what it says about his parents.

I've just realised I know he and Emma were the licensees of a pub in Aston in 1935 so that narrows down the date of death to between 1935 and 1955 at least!

OK, I've found his death via the Probate entries, December 1944.  The corresponding death info suggests a dob in 1870 (approx).  I'll dig a little deeper...

Thank you for all that info, I really don't know how you do it!  William had two siblings and I knew from the 1911 census that one had died but I had no idea who it was or how I would find out.  The other one was Ena, who married the rather magnificently named Stanley Ernest Fuller Buckle.  I'll do a little more looking but I think you have found the right Edward for me.  I'm really grateful!
