Hi Lorraine

As far as I am aware a census was not taken in India in 1861. This sounds remarkably like the 1861 Worldwide Army Index on Findmypast. This grandiose title is actually a copy of the army muster rolls for Qtr2 (ie April to June) 1861 - so at the time of the 1861 census.

The UK census included soldiers if they were 'Home' at the time – until 1911 which did include overseas army personnel and their families. However they very, very rarely include regimental number, which are included on FindMyPast, Again, census should include some indication of age and place of birth. Which is again missing from your find.

FindMyPast have 111 William Whites listed as serving in the army at this time. You should post any other details you have. His record may have survived – but an idea of year and place of birth will be needed.

Also, were any children born in exotic places?

How much did you pay for this information?

Ken

Hi Lorraine,

The 1861 Census like most censuses I believe covered those in the armed forces wherever they may have been posted. There are as Ken points out above many William Whites serving in the army at this time in the 1861 Worldwide Army Index, but not any William W Whites.

The info that you posted suggests the following 1861 census entry may be him:

Type: Vessel
Name: White, William W
Birth Year: 1834
Age: 27
Sex: M
Reg Dist/Parish: Royal Navy at Sea & in Ports Abroad
County: Royal Navy at Sea & at Ports Abroad

The above from FindMyPast, the same record on familysearch gives a place of birth as Cork.

Cannanore, India now Kannur is on the Indian Arabian Sea Coast, therefore the above entry would make sense, if it is your man.

The 66th Foot were in India were between 1857 & 1865, arriving to late help with suppressing the Indian Mutiny. But remaining in India until 1865.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Hi thanks for the reply I have my GG fathers service record when he re enlisted for another regiment which I found on Forces war records. But according to the records he stated he had served in the 66th foot in Canada and Nova Scotia for 5 1/2 years but his record shows on his re enlistment that he served just short of 10 years (I do believe I have already posted about this)

So was trying to find were else he had been and also I do not have his service no for the 66th foot yet. Am I allowed to post attchments with copies of his service records on here. So that anyone can see how confusing it is ??

Regards Lorraine
