Mary Adams 'natural daughter' of Col John Llewelyn b 1776
« on: Monday 14 October 13 10:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

A difficult one unfortunately.....

I am looking for the birth of Mary Adams - Mary was the illegitimate daughter of Col John Llewelyn of Penllergare, Glamorgan and Sarah Adams of Oxford [it is said in numerous documents this is the case].  Mary married Lewis Weston Dillwyn in 1807 and I have their marriage record.  It is Mary's birth that I am seeking.

It is said Mary was born in 1776 and she took her mother's name.  Does this mean she was baptised as Llewelyn or Adams???

Unfortunately this is all that I know and in desperation I thought I would post to the forum as I have had such great success with perceived brick walls in the past.

In eager anticipation

I realise I posted this to the wrong board and it should be Oxfordshire as this is where Mary's mother lived.  Here's hoping the moderator can 'relocate' this post... ;D

Are you looking at Oxford or the Shire - there is a massive difference in terms of which PR's we should look up for you? Also if you have any slightest clue toward that more specific location i am sure you would have put it in - but without it well .......... now where did I put that hay rick?

Hello

I am sorry but I have not idea - all that I know was written in a document relating to Lewis Weston Dillwyn and that it said Mary's mother had an affair with Col John Llewelyn when he was studying at Oxford.

I also came across a family tree on ancestry last night that said Mary was born in Bristol but I have often found these trees lack some rigour.  Unfortunately this was after I posted to Rootschat.  However the logic may be that Mary's mother Sarah Adams fell pregnant at Oxford and just maybe she gave birth at Bristol????

I am sorry that I cannot give you any more information than this.... :(

Kind regards

On the 1851 census, Mary gives her birthplace as Bristol (and birth year as 1777).  The 1841 census shows Mary and Lewis residing in Swansea, but Mary is recorded as "not born in county".

Do you have the entry relating to Mary from the National Probate calendar, or Lewis's entry in the Dictionary of National Biography - both have a "Llewelyn" connection?

Family Search has a Mary ADAMS, daughter of Sarah ADAMS baptised in 1770 in Weare, Somerset.  Weare is approx. 15 miles SW of Bristol.  Although the date is a tad early, I note from the 1851 census that Mary is a year older than her husband - might she have given a later birth year to minimise an even greater age difference?

Hello Pennie

In relation to Mary's birth and the reasons for the inconsistencies - you could be right but I don't know.

Yes the family does have a Llewellyn connection as you have identified and I was lucky enough to find the probate records for both Mary and Lewis.

Thanks so much for finding her in familysearch - this is much appreciated.

Kind regards
