Local knowledge Collessie & Monimail - LEES & BEVERIDGE
« on: Tuesday 15 October 13 05:08 BST (UK) »
In the 1891 census 4xg g/father Alexander LEES (b.c1812) was living in Collessie at what looks like Brige Hill Cottage, (may be Bridge misspelt). It is recorded between Melville Lodge and ? Mill Farm. Can anyone tell me where it was and whether it still exists?

Another BEVERIDGE descendent told me of a MI which reads:
"Harry BEVERIDGE 6/7/1812 [aged] 67. Servant at Melville for 44 years. Earl and Countess of Leven"
Unfortunately she doesn't know where it is. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to briefly search the Monimail Old Cemetery but couldn't find it there. Can anyone tell me where this MI is located?

Hi leesmob

Could it be Woodmill Farm.  Look here http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=328500&y=710500&z=120&sv=Howe+of+Fife&st=3&tl=Map+of+Howe+of+Fife,+Fife+&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf

On the map, if you follow the Den Burn through Collessie Den, you'll find it just north west of Collessie.  Follow the railway line and you'll get to Woodmill Mains. Melville Home Farm is eastwards of Collessie.

The map is scaleable using the Zoom control on the right and you can use the pointers on the corners, top, bottom and sides to move about. Or click left, hold and drag your mouse as you want.

Enjoy

I've just had another look at the census comparing it to the map on the link and I'm pretty sure now that it's not Woodmill Farm, but Daftmill Farm just south of Melville Home Farm so thank you for solving the farm question.

Hi leesmob

Glad I was able to point you into the right area and that you were able to solve one of your questions.

Re the MI for Monimail - you could email speccoll@st-andrews.ac.uk and ask someone to look it up for you.  They have a copy of it.

Regards
