Baptism translation from Latin Please
« on: Wednesday 16 October 13 18:36 BST (UK) »
Hi Chatters,

I have located 10 baptismal records for my gg grandfather & his siblings c1820-1840. I don't read Latin.  :(

Could someone please do a verbatim transcription of the entire text of this one? Once I see how the flow goes, then I'm hoping I can get a handle on the others.  ;)

I'm having a devil of a time with the dates (particularly the days) & understanding if there is an indication of birth date or only baptismal date.

BTW, the child noted in this record is usually shown as Joseph S Miller in Canadian records, but I'm not seeing any indication that there is a hint at what the S stands for in the baptismal record. Have I missed something?  ???

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Hi

The LDS do some good guides to parish register translations, including Latin.

Thank you Gaie. This link looks very helpful.  :)

I'm pretty dense. The birth date for this fellow is: 31 Mar 1835. (I don't know the birth dates for all of his siblings, hence my desire to get this right.)

Based on the guide, I'm still not certain what the date is in the baptism record.  ::) ??? I think the word in the first line is Octobris which could stand for the 8 in 1835 or is it on the second line where it says millesimo octing?tisimo trigesemo ?

I'm still hoping that someone will take a run at this one so I have a guide. ;)

Hello -

I would read the date as 11th October, 1831 and the name of the child baptised as Joseph, son of Anthony Müller and Magdalena Klein.

Thanks craggagh.  :) Can you tell me which series of words refers to the date so that I can look at similar placement in the other baptisms?

This entry definitely appeared in the 1835 section of the book, so I don't think it can be 1831. ??? The parents are correct though.  Oh goodness, another fly in the ointment. ::) ;D

Based on what you've written, it sounds like I'm not going to get birth dates from this - only baptism dates - which is great & likely the best I can hope for. :)

Anyone else want to take a go at a verbatim translation of the entire paragraph?  ;D

Hello -

Hodie = today - undecimo = 11 - Mensis = month - Octobris = October - anno = year - millesimo = 1000 - octingentesima = 800 - trigesemo = 30 - primo = 1.

That would be my reading of what is written, although I stand to be corrected.

a me infra scripto by me below written baptizatus est was baptized  Josephus filius Joseph the son (have you thought that the extra S might stand for his confirmation name, which wouldn't appear here?)
Francisci Antonii Muller of Francis Anthony Muller not sure of next word. Could it be civis citizen?
et Magdalenae Klein conjugae and of Magdalena Klein his wife not sure of next word. Wedded?

:-* Thank you. I had no idea on the god parent reference. Excellent.

I'll give some thought to the confirmation name. When he died, his death cert noted his mother's surname Sayor - incorrect I now know. I wondered if it was his middle name & therefore presumed to be his mother's surname. In any event, it looks like the answer isn't in baptismal records.

Thanks again.
