Cannot find marriage
« on: Friday 18 October 13 17:33 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find the marriage between William Newbury and a Hannah xxxxxxx, suspected to be in Cheadle around 1852-1854?

This is a link to the 1871 census, their oldest child John, born in 1854 was born in Rugeley.

Hannah was born in Cheadle so have assumed the marriage to be round there somewhere

I have looked and looked and cannot find this anywhere. I have been told Hannah's maiden name was Oliver

any help much appreciated!

Some online Trees have Hannah as a Hannah Carden. The difficulty with this is the Carden/"Newbury" marriage didn't take place until 1858 at Bishops Castle Shropshire according to UKBMD or Clun Shropshire(GRO).

my contact i think has bouht some of the birth certs for the children which gave him the Oliver maiden name, and the gage ties up with Hannah Newbury on the later census's.  I wonder why their marriage cant be found though ? could they have married at an establishment that hasnt released its records as yet? :(

I think possibly buying a copy of one of their childrens birth certs may be a step in the right direction.  It will clear up the doubt over Hannah's maiden name

I note from their occupations that there is a gypsy element here.    From posts I've read on here many times often there is no registered marriage - I think they married within their own community but not a legal/registered marriage as we know it.   I wonder if this is another such case?

i hadnt considered that, but its a very good point!  that may well be the case and explain why there is no legal marriage record :)
