Alexander William Gamack
« on: Saturday 19 October 13 06:52 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me when and how Alexander William Gamack departed Scotland for Australia? He was born 4 Jan 1809 at Cobarty, near Aberdeen and became a surgeon. Parents were Alexander and Margaret Gamack.

cheers
Jill   :)

ancestry has him in the UK Medical Registers in 1887 ans 1889 at 8 Torrington Place Gordon square, London

1903 is the last one listed and he is at Oriel House Lidfield Gardens Hampstead. He qualified on 27 Dec 1878.

So he left some time from 1903 onwards? It also looks as if he was resident in London for quite a few years prior to leaving.

Born 1809? So is the one I found a son or other relation? He did train in Aberdeen according to the registers.

Thanks Crisane. I think he came from a medical family and maybe this is a nephew as he didn't marry until he was in Australia. I'll keep searching.  ::)

Sands Directories, Sydney and New South Wales, Australia, 1858-1933
MEDICAL DIRECTORY
Name/Business Name - Alexander Gamack
Year - 1858-9
Page No:   285

There is an Alexander Gamack on the NSW Historical Electoral Rolls from 1844 through to 1862  No occupations given.

Alexander was on Norfolk Island 1830 to 1839 then hemoved around. You probably have all this but I am trying to establish his first appearance in OZ

Yes Crisane I do have this but it is always great when someone else confirms what you have.

I've tried going through immigration here in Australia but nothing has come up.

Hi

I can't find any shipping records either and I have used all the variations of his name I can think of.

Hopefully someone else will be along to help

  • Manners cost nothing, and are worth the effort.

He was on Norfolk Island in 1830 - 1833 working as an assistant surgeon. It was a convict penal settlement at that time.
1844, working as a surgeon in Newcastle, New South Wales.

There is a Dr Eckford and a Dr Gamack on the Brig "Emma" 5th July 1848 arriving at the Port of Hobart Town.
