Robert & Lydia (Orford) Robertson
« on: Wednesday 23 October 13 17:33 BST (UK) »
I am using the Ancestry website to trace family ancestors in Norfolk.

My gt grandmother (Emily Robertson, b. ~1861, Thetford) was the daughter of Robert Robertson (b. 1820, Stoke Ferry) and Lydia (b. 1831, West Dereham).

Family trees on Ancestry all name Lydia as nee Orford, and self-consistent census data is given together with birth/death information.  However, no marriage info is recorded in these trees.

I have searched but cannot find a marriage of Lydia Orford to Rbt. Robertson; the closest is a marriage of Lydia Orset & Rbt. Robertson in Q3 1852 at Downham.  However, Lydia Orset is not recorded in the 1841/51 censuses.

Could a Norfolk accent have caused the vicar to record Orford as Orset ?

Any input would be greatly appreciated !!

My input (for what it is worth) is -
1) I wouldnt take any noticeof online trees unless the owner can produce the evidence to back it up
2) If there are several trees with certain info, it does not make it any more likely the info is correct, as often people just blindly copy info without confirming it.
3) Ancestry can be a brilliant tool, but you may have to use other sources aswell for complete research

And most importantly
4) If you get your gr grandmothers birth cert, it will give you Lydia's maiden name. Then you can be sure you are searching along the right lines and not going off on a wrong track.

It may also be that Orfet is seen as Orset by seeing the  "f" as an old style "s", Dave

Liz/Sharon/Dave,

Many thanks to all for the advice (esp. not to believe everything in a Tree), the solid info and where to go next. Yes, Marianne & Robert are two of the many additional siblings and the occupation "blacksmith" for Rbt. Robertsons on marriage cert. ties in with census info.

The apparent Orford is/is not Orset mystery is solved by you Dave, with the Orfet = Orset transcription at some time.  Explains nicely why Orset is seen neither before nor since (although I did find it in many French records which came up on Ancestry).

Best Regards,
