Else Beck
« on: Friday 25 October 13 10:44 BST (UK) »
My grandmother who was German and lived in Germany came over to live in London and married my grandfather (both deceased now). Because she died in childbirth when my mother was only 5, we do not have much information on her.
I am on Ancestry, and they keep sending me a "tip" to say that they have a record of the above name and what ship she sailed on but the ship was headed for New York.
Any clues anyone ?
No ship would go via New York to get to the Uk, so do you think this is just not "my" Else Beck ?

Greetings
Any chance of some years?
Could the ship be going to New York via London or are ancestry saying it started in England?
It could have started in Germany

Ancestry tips ...

My favourite is that my grx4 grandparents who were hatched, matched and despatched in Cornwall in the 1700s had a son in Tennessee in 1775. Several dozen people have adopted my ancestors into their tree on that basis, even though it is complete nonsense. The names of their son born in Cornwall and the one born in Tennessee don't even match, they just look a little bit alike.

According to FindMyPast (oops, and according to suzard! I missed that), the Ilse Beck who travelled Liverpool-New York in 1940 was born c1920. So that seems to settle it without paying to peek any further!

The one thing you do need, if you don't know your Else's parents' names, is her marriage certificate, which should give you her father's name and occupation, and whether he was still living. The names of witnesses could also give clues -- if she had family in England, a family member might have been a witness.

Else would have anglicized the spelling of her name (the German name Else is pronounced like Elsa) to avoid being called "else" as in "or else", I imagine. ;) If the family knows her name was actually Else, that is the one that will be in records before her life in England, I would imagine.

[Ray] ... there may have been a stillbirth.

Janey

Else "would" . . . . .

Sorry, "would" is too much of an assumption for me.

Wiki=
"Elsa can be found in Hispanic, Swedish and Scottish populations today but it originated with the German and Hebrew people. Elsa is considered a variation of the names Alice and Elizabeth. Alice was originally from the Old German Adelaide and then the High German Adelheidis and means 'of noble birth' or 'noble maiden"
