Barbour - Kelso marriage, before 1806
« on: Saturday 26 October 13 19:27 BST (UK) »
I have a piece of framed embroidery that says on the back,
Embroidered by my grandmother Jane Barbour, Paisley, Scotland
before her marriage to Archibald Kelso from Isle of Arran, then in
Paisley, before 1806.
This branch of the Kelso family died out in
Canada in the 1950s but were my grandmothers cousins & I have
some artifacts, needlework & furniture from them. I would like to
find out more but after slogging around in Irish history for months,
not looking forward to potential brick walls. Can anyone suggest
where to start looking for Barbours & Keslos?

Best first port of call is FamilySearch as it's free. They have a marriage for Alexander Kelso and Jean Barbour in 1804 with banns read at Glasgow and Paisley. You can view the actual entries in the Old Parish Register on ScotlandsPeople, where you need to buy credits but the cheapest credit bundle is only £7.00.

FamilySearch doesn't seem to have any baptism records for children of that couple, though.

If Alexander and Jean died in Scotland after 1855, the ScotlandsPeople site should also have their death certificates, which will say who their parents were.
AYRSHIRE - Strachan, McCrae, Haddow, Haggerty, Neilson, Alexander
ABERDEENSHIRE (Cruden and Longside) - Fraser, Hay, Logan, Hutcheon or Hutchison, Sangster
YORKSHIRE (Worsbrough) - Green, Oxley, Firth, Cox, Rock
YORKSHIRE (Royston and Carlton) - Senior, Simpson, Roydhouse, Hattersley

That was fast. Thank you so much for the guidance. This cracks the
door open for me to start on the Scottish branch of my family.
