Marriage Look-up Garrett Welsh Mary Copinger
« on: Tuesday 29 October 13 11:08 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a marriage betwee two of my great great parents Garrett Welsh and Mary Copinger. All the information I have on them comes from The English and Welsh Census records and a birth certificate of one of their children.

Their earliest appearence is on the 1851 census. Garrett is listed as Garrat Walsh aged 40. he is living in Maesteg with his wife Mary aged 30, son Patrick, aged 7 and daughters Bridget 11 Ellen 2 and Catherine 11 months. they all give their birthplace as Ireland.

The 1861 census is a little more helpful (but not much)
Garrett is now listed as Gavel Welch aged 49 but born in Ireland Cork.
Mary is aged 40 Born in the same place, as is Patrick now 17.
Their are several younger children now born in Maesteg.

I have a birth certificate for one of the children born in Maesteg and it shows the mothers name as Mary Copinger

Garrett's name is spelled differently on different documents  sometimes Garrett sometimes Garratt sometimes with one r sometimes with 2 etc. He is also called Walsh, Welch, or Welsh.

However his wife looks easier to trace as she is a Copinger, although this may also be spelled Coppinger.

Their son Patrick married in a Roman Catholic Ceremony in Swansea so i guess the family is catholic.

also given that the 1851 census shows a daughter Bridget aged 11 i guess I am looking for a Marriage before 1840.  Garrett would be under 30 and Mary under 20.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to find such a marriage and where do I start?
Grateful for any help. Thanks.

Cork123, thank you for your efforts but I already have all those records. I have managed to trace Garratt and Mary through all the censuses. What I am trying to establish is when and where they got married. And if possible where they were born.
From the census records I know they came from Cork in Ireland. I do know that Mary's maiden name is Copinger and that the Copinger family many many years earlier were a prominent cork family. I doubt that Mary was part of that family but it would be great to find out exactly where in Cork Garrett and Mary came from.

Have a look at this parish register page from www.irishgenealogy.ie
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/reels/cork%20%26%20ross.castlehaven%20%26%20myross.p4774.00056.pdf

Its transcribed as Baptism for Patrick Walsh of Jame Walsh and Mary Coppinger but when you look at the original page 25 Mar 1844 I read it the father as Garret Walsh -see what you think.
No relevant Walsh Coppinger marriage showing on the site.

Hi David ref your query for your gggrandparents. They could have originated anywhere in county cork.
There was in existence in Ireland a "naming pattern" for children so you could bear this in mind for any of the names of Garret & Mary's children. I have the following records which may or may not be relevant but as the records you are looking for are well before Civil Reg in 1864 all that will be available (if) are Baptism.
Baptism record for MARY COPPINGER in Parish of CAHARAGH (this is West Carbery Co Cork)
4th June 1820. Parents: JOHN COPPINGER & ELLEN CRIMMEN
Baptism to the same parents:
23 November 1822 same Parish RICHARD COPPINGER.

*** I note from 1851 Census posted a daughter name of ELLEN age 2 This may tie in with the Irish Naming Tradition I mentioned earlier & she may have been named after ELLEN CRIMMEN mother of Mary Coppinger above.

There is also another Baptism record for a MARY COPPINGER 12 Feb 1823 in Parish of Aughadown (near Skibereen Co Cork) Parents are Richard Coppinger & Cathe Cremeen.

AnnClares mention of a baptism for Patrick Walsh looks interesting but name of father incorrect. Saying that when transcriptions are being done from old registers mistakes can occur. I had been searching for years for my grandparents marriage record and only recently discovered it to find my grandfathers christian name was recorded completely differently to his given name. Regards Frances :)

I'd agree with annclare. The father's name is Garret and James is a mistranscription. There are no surviving marriage records for Castlehaven RC parish so if the marriage took place there, you are out of luck unfortunately.
