Joseph Billingsley in Mile End Old Town Union Workhouse
« on: Monday 04 November 13 23:31 GMT (UK) »

I have discovered the death of a Joseph Billingsley.

He was born in Liverpool, but to my surprise died at Stepney, Mile End Old Town Union Workhouse, Tower Hamlets, on 5th April 1901. Aged 45 years.

Being from Liverpool I really don't know anywhere in London, so I would love to know where about this workhouse was, and could I access the records for it?.

Also I would love to find where Joseph would have been buried?.

I hope this enough information, and fingers crossed some kind person can help me with my search.

Here's Hoping

Billo.

I would assume he would be on the 1901 census taken on 31/03/1901, ref RG13/338 FOLIO 98 PAGES 1-26

Have you found him on any othere census?

1901  census for Mile End Workhouse has been written with a very fine hand, I cannot see him listed so far though

I know this doesn't give you a place of burial but  according to Cliff Webb's Cemeteries and Crematoria Bethal  Green, Stepney and Poplar come under Tower Hamlets from 1841,
I do believe these records will be at the London Metropolitan Archives  40 Northampton Road London but it does not mean he was necessarily buried there, many burials took place at Brookwood in Surrey  from 1854, these records are lodged at Surrey archives as far as I know

I stand to be corrected here unless someone else comes up with something more concrete

Happy Hunting

A quick look at Mile End Old Town infirmary records has him admitted to the infirmary on 2 Apr 1901.  His trade is given as lighterman and his next of kin is given as Jane Bush (sister), 74 Ellesmere Road, Old Ford (that is an area of Tower hamlets in which the infirmary was).  His death age 46 is recorded on 5 April.  The 1901 census was on 31 Mar 1901.

Digging a bit further.  Are you sure that the man who died in the workhouse was born in Liverpool?  There doesn't seem to be a birth for that name registered in L'pool in the appropriate time frame?  Whereas, there is a Joseph Billingsley, born in the Tower Hamlets area in 1854 (right age) a lighterman at the age of 16, with a sister Jane.  Could you have the wrong man?

The 1891 censuses have 2 Joseph Billingsleys - one born 1854 living in Whitechapel, the other born 1852 living in West Derby Liverpool.

I wonder as well if it is the right man who dies in the workhouse.

Hello again,

Thank you so much to Roots Chat members, really appreciate all the replies.

Scratching my head now over Joseph. He was a joiner and married to a Mary Jane Billingsley,(nee Bradshaw) but Mary Jane marries a John Hopwood Harper in December quarter of 1906 in Ormskirk.

In the 1911 census she is stated as being married for 4 years, with her children to Joseph Billingsley.

The "will" entry for Joseph Billingsley was January 1937. So either they were divorced or Joseph disappeared.

Will have to re-access the info I have. But I don't think the London Joseph is mine. ???

Thanks again for your replies, and if there is anything I can help you with up here in Liverpool, let me know and I will do my best to help.

Billo.
