Thank you for that information.  The family story has it that George was the only one of his family to settle in Australia.  Would it be possible to find more information about his siblings.  I can find my way around Australian records but find UK records a bit of a mystery

Hi Ian
Thanks again.  I haven't gone through the Ark stuff yet as I keep dropping out but will try again later.  One thing I did notice is that William Parfitt the father has Bristol and Bath as his place of birth.  Being a ship's steward would that suggest that he was on an ocean going ship or local shipping.   I found a news article at the National Library of Australia about the supposed loss of the steamer 'Calabar' with George Parfitt, cook, aged 22, Gravesend among the crew.  I think this is how George came to Queensland as crew on a ship and stayed.

I am also a great granddaughter of George Parfitt born around 1852-1853 from Gravesend. I was born at Warwick,QLD near Thanes Creek where George and his family lived, gold mined and ran a store. My grandfather was John Henry Parfitt, the second child of George. I only have information of my father, Henry's immediate family and found the Census for 1861 very helpful. Thankyou.
