John Hill married Mary Harris
« on: Saturday 09 November 13 00:29 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if someone could help me find 'overseas' records.
My 3 x's GGParents were John Hill and Mary Harris, m 11 Oct 1813 at Mickleton.
On the baptism records of their two youngest children William bp 20 May 1826, and Sarah bp 26 Dec 1828 is inscribed born in New Zealand. These baptisms were at St Lawrence in Mickleton.
I am a NZer and my understanding is that early records before NZ was officially settled would be in a repository in UK. (that is anything relating to UK citizens who were overseas at the time).

It is the whereabouts of likely records could be found that is my interest.

My puzzle is why were John and Mary in NZ? Their records seem to be at St Lawrence Church, Mickleton which points to Anglican parish.

NZ officially was settled 1840 so I wondered about missionaries?
My Hill family were in Mickleton area until Joyce Hill, Granddaughter of John and Mary, emigrated to NZ in 1874 with her husband Caleb Blackwell.
[I guess the descendents of the Hill Harris families would still be in the Mickleton area.]
Thank you

I am a bit confused here;
BAPTISM;
SARAH Hill, 26 Dec 1828, St Laurence, Mickleton, Glus
Birth 13 Nov 1828
Parents JOHN/MARY
Fathers Occp Labourer

So unlikely a Missionary or Military connection.
So if she was born 13 Nov I cant see how they would have arrived back from NZ to Baptise her a few weeks later?

"the journey taking between 124 and 172 days."

Hi Crowsfeet,
Source: Gloucestershire Family History Society
I can confirm that John HILL married Mary HARRIS at St Lawrence, Mickleton, 11th October 1813, by Banns.
I can also confirm the following baptisms at St Lawrence, Mickleton:-
20/05/1826, William HILL, son of John & Mary, a Labourer of Mickleton. Born 29th December 1825.
26/12/1828, Sarah HILL, dau of John & Mary, a Labourer of Mickleton. Born 13th November 1828.
Hope that helps?
Victor

Hi Trish
Thanks for your reply to my puzzle. I have read your link to early NZ history but like other literature I have explored it is non-specific due probably to lack of early records in NZ before 1840. If any records exist I think they would be in some repository in UK. British Nationals being overseas bmd's being registered in UK.

I have also found it puzzling about the time factors between birth and bp of these children. John Hill was a labourer, and its hard to think of any reason for him to go with family overseas unless emigrating, which clearly he didn't as he is recorded as dying at Mickleton in 1860.

Victor: Thanks also for your confirmation of the b & bp dates. That is very helpful.
Grateful for the assistance

Hi Rootschatters

I think I have finally solved this puzzle I asked about.

Today I was able to see the actual parish baptismal register for  Sarah Hill.

In my opinion it reads:
Baptised 26 December 1828, Sarah Daughter of John & Mary Hill, Mickleton, Labourer, J. Baylis, Vicar. Along the bottom of the entry is NB born 13 November 1828,

Although the B is written poorly & could be a Z, I think that it is N,B. Note Bene not NZ as has been transcribed. Looking through the page of the register there was another entry that had a similar NB with a birthdate following.

I feel satisfied that this is more feasible than what had been believed by our family. And more in line with the lifestyle of these precious people.

Thank you again Trish and Victor who took the time to help with this small problem.

Regards Crowsfeet
